Youth job fair coming to Montgomery College’s Rockville campusThe Montgomery County Workforce Investment Board’s Youth Council and the Latin American Youth Center will present a youth job fair 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 31 in the gymnasium of Montgomery College’s Rockville campus. The job fair is aimed at 16- to 21-year-olds and more than 50 employers will be represented. Participants are asked to dress appropriately for interviews and take resumes, Social Security card and pens with blue or black ink. Mock interviews and on-site interviews will be offered for entry-level jobs as well as seasonal and permanent positions. Admission and parking for the event are free. Prizes will be given away. Parkland students raise money for Camp Friendship Parkland Middle School’s Builders Club sponsored its Second Annual Spring Fling Dance May 2 to benefit Camp Friendship. All proceeds from the dance will go to the Carol Jean Cancer Foundation⁄Camp Friendship, a free summer camp in Laytonsville for children with cancer. The dance raised $752, which is a 38 percent increase over last year’s total, according to a news release from the Aspen Hill school. Carol Jean was a Montgomery County schoolteacher and former teacher at Parkland who died from a brain tumor. Her family founded the Carol Jean Cancer Foundation Inc. in her name and opened Camp Friendship in her honor. The Builders Club presented Beverly Gough, Jean’s sister, with the proceeds from the dance on May 17 at the Second Annual Family ‘‘K” Day at Camp Friendship. Richard Montgomeryseniors receive scholarships Four Richard Montgomery High School seniors have won 2008 National Merit Scholarships. They are Julie Chang, Edward D. Lee, Benjamin B. Lu and Lindsey Y. Shi. RM studentswin preservation award A 2008 Peerless Rockville Preservation Award was presented May 12 to two of the student editors-in-chief of Richard Montgomery High School’s student newspaper. Seniors Sandhya Devaraj and Amanda Yeager were recognized for their series, ‘‘Looking back: Richard Montgomery over the years,” which was published in The Tide last year. Richard Montgomery’smagazine earns awards Richard Montgomery High School’s literary magazine, Fine Lines, recently won two awards for last year’s publication. Fine Lines won the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s Silver Crown and The National Scholastic Press Association’s Pacemaker Award, making it one of five school magazines nationwide to win the honor. Student editors last year were Aku Ammah-Tagoe, Brian Zhang and Fiona Mathews; faculty sponsors were David Dumas and Paul Klein. Four RM students place fifth in programming contest A team of students from Richard Montgomery High School placed fifth in the annual University of Maryland High School Programming Contest on March 8. Thirty-nine high schools from the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area competed. Daniil Kitchaev, Abiola Laniyonu, Martin Petrov and Ailun Wang shared a cash prize. Richard Montgomery alum’s photos appear in Post, Times Photographs of Zachary Tracer, a 2007 graduate of Richard Montgomery High School, have appeared in The Washington Post and The New York Times. The photos were used in a story on a Duke student from China whose support for Tibetan independence triggered threats of retaliation against her and her family. Tracer, a former editor at Richard Montgomery’s student newspaper, The Tide, works on Duke University’s paper, The Chronicle. Colonelval iscoming to Magruder Col. Zadok Magruder High School will hold Colonelval, its annual end-of-the-year carnival, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 31. The festival will feature food, moonbounces, games and more on the Derwood school’s practice field. The Magruder PTSA will also hold a silent auction during the carnival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Magruder High School is located at 5939 Muncaster Mill Road in Derwood.
