Navy surgeon generalvisits North Potomac school

Students at DuFief Elementary School in North Potomac were treated to a special guest May 14.

After a career day full of podiatrists, attorneys and Pilates instructors, in stepped Vice Admiral Adam Robinson, the United States Navy’s surgeon general.

‘‘All the students were captivated,” said Suzanne Pape, a school counselor. ‘‘He talked about reaching your goals, and how you can do whatever you want to do with hard work.”

A parent at the school works with Robinson, who is in charge of all the Iraqi hospitals for the Navy, Pape said. After his presentation was over, he gave each student a gold coin, a Navy symbol for a job well done.

Pape said the surgeon general was the biggest hit with the students, but a K-9 officer — complete with dogs — and a videogame software engineer also brought wide eyes from the students.

For Pape, the day is an important step in the development of the children.

‘‘I think it shows them the kinds of jobs that are out there,” she said. ‘‘It starts them thinking about what is out there.”
