The mailman was entering a building at 3:30 p.m. May 11 in the Potomac Oaks Condominium complex at 808 Quince Orchard Blvd. when three young men standing in the hallway said hello, then jumped him, said Sgt. Rudy Wagner, a Gaithersburg Police Department spokesman.
"He said hi to them and they immediately assaulted him, punched, kicked him, and they ran out of the building," after stealing the mailman's wallet, said Wagner, who said the mailman was "significantly beaten" although his injuries were "not life-threatening."
The victim drove himself to the post office on Firstfield Road, where he called police, Wagner said. He was taken to a hospital where he was treated and released.
No mail was stolen in the attack, Wagner said. Police recovered some of the mailman's property.
The assault is the second on a postal worker in recent months. According to Rockville City Police, a 31-year-old female letter carrier was stabbed in the torso in Rockville in December.
It is a federal crime to attack a postal worker.
The U.S. Postal Service for Maryland did not return calls for comment.
Anyone with information about the attack is asked to call the Gaithersburg Police Department at 301-258-6400.
