Athlete of the Week: Lamaar Thomas

At the county track championships Saturday at Northwestern High, Friendly High junior Lamaar Thomas broke one of the meet’s longest-standing records, winning the 100-meter dash in 10.55 seconds. The previous mark was 10.61, set in 1976 by Northwestern’s Kendrick Higgins. Thomas, a junior, won the 200 (21.63) and placed sixth in the long jump (21 feet, 4.5 inches). He’s the first Friendly athlete to win the boys’ 100 and 200 titles at the county outdoor meet since Byron Stewart in 1974.

Honor Roll

David Martin of Laurel,Katelyn Stokes of Eleanor Roosevelt and Brandon Chisolm and Lauren Chisolm of Friendly won county district singles tennis titles on Friday. District doubles winning teams included Mike Stephenson and MikeHardman of Bowie, ChristelleTiagni and Chika Ugboh of Parkdale, Justin Green and Jonathan Brevard of Oxon Hill and Betty Dardhiran andGi-Ann Acosta of Oxon Hill. The district winners in mixed doubles were Masha Sitnova and Subodh Arora of Roosevelt and Cherlyce Fields and Phillip Fitzgerald of Suitland.

Roosevelt senior Kelli Thibou broke a 21-year-old county meet record in the boys’ 800 meters (1 minute, 51.98). Donte Holmes (400), Daniel Edmund (1,600), and Brian Faherty (3,200) won individual titles helping the Raiders to the county track crown.

Bladensburg junior Leslie Murray won the boys’ long jump at the county track championships.
