The master bedroom suite has a spiral staircase that leads to a loft and sitting area, a fireplace and scenic views of Swan Creek in Fort Washington.
The general theme of this home perched above Swan Creek (a tributary of the Potomac River) is one of light and nature. It is characterized by large windows, open spaces, and natural motifs. This custom-designed home maximizes the natural light and provides magnificent views of the waterway.

The grand foyer lives up to its name, with a two-story entranceway and a chandelier with a much more organic feel than the traditional gold fixtures. The floor comprises four foot-by-four foot marble slabs while a carved red oak staircase curves delicately up into the second floor. A suspended walkway⁄overlook at the top is all that separates the foyer and the living room.

This living room, like the foyer, is spacious. A hand-carved marble fireplace sits along one wall. The side of the room that faces the water consists almost entirely of wide glass windows and doors. Beyond these doors, a large maintenance-free deck overlooks the creek.

The entire home is designed to be open and flowing from one room into the next. The kitchen, which lies next to the living room, embodies this. Cherry wood cabinets adorn two sides of this area as walls. Opposite and at an angle from them is a bar-like counter with two tiers. In between the two lies an island with a large stovetop.

Off of the kitchen, the space extends in two directions. In one direction is a large sitting area on a Bolivian rosewood floor with many windows overlooking the water. In the other direction is a smaller space, just outside of which is a small deck. The deck, known as the ‘‘grilling porch,” enables cooking away from the main kitchen.

A second set of stairs also comes from the kitchen, with a large window on the first landing letting in the light, and another second-story overlook above.

Framing the entranceway are the dining room and study. The dining room has panel molding and a tray ceiling, from which hangs a chandelier similar in style to the others throughout the home. The arched entranceway allows for a dynamic feel to the lines of the room within. The study to the other side has built-in shelving, and crown molding about the ceiling.

The final first-floor room is the master bedroom. This room features a gas fireplace, a set of bay windows facing the water, and a black spiraling staircase in the middle of the room up to a second story overlook. The walk-in closet is divided down the middle. The bedroom also has its own bathroom with a large, whirlpool tub, a separate shower with a five-spray head, and a private bathroom.

The basement is completely finished and incorporates a variety of amenities such as a billiards room, an in-home gym and a private theater with tiered seating and a nine-foot screen. Also on the lower level are a full kitchen, a full bathroom, and space for bedrooms⁄offices and a sitting area. A utility room off of the gym also reveals the home’s own separate water-treatment system.

The second floor is much like the main level of the house. It’s very open with many windows to let in natural light. It has several bedrooms, each opening into a bathroom for convenience. It also contains a long ‘‘party room” over the garage. The top of the main staircase is an open walkway, but is also very spacious and can be used as a gallery for entertainment. It has been used to host live bands that play for guests as they enter below.
