City passes $49 million budget

Tuesday, May 16, 2006

The Bowie City Council passed its largest budget Monday night, a $49 million spending plan that council members say includes ambitious projects – such as the city police force – and moves the city into the future.

The budget will go into effect July 1, and includes a three-cent property tax increase per $100 assessed value and a 7 percent hike in city water fees. The budget also includes an $8 million capital improvement project funding that includes money for a proposed new City Hall-police station building.

‘‘This document builds on the history of the community and has a forward focus and future thinking,” Mayor G. Frederick Robinson said.

An attempt to add a last minute amendment was shot down when Jenkins motioned to abolish the public safety officer position since the city will be creating its own police force. Only he and D. Michael Lyles (Dist. 4) voted in favor of the motion.
