4A South baseball, softball playoffs continue

Four county high school softball teams will be in action Thursday along with eight baseball teams, as the 4A South Region playoffs continue.

In softball, Northwestern will visit Bowie and Charles H. Flowers will travel to Eleanor Roosevelt on Thursday afternoon as the 4A South Region softball playoffs continue. Both games will start at 4 p.m. All four teams earned spots in the regional semifinals with victories on Wednesday.

In baseball, sixth-seeded Parkdale will visit third-seeded Laurel at 2:30 p.m. The winner will move on to Friday's semifinals against the winner of today's game between No. 7 Oxon Hill and No. 2 Bowie (4:30 p.m. at Bowie High). In the other half of the bracket, fifth-seeded Northwestern visits fourth-seeded High Point at 3 p.m. and No. 9 Flowers travels to No. 1 Roosevelt at 4:30 p.m. The semifinal games will be at 4:30 p.m. Friday at the site of the higher-seeded team. The regional final is set for Saturday at a time to be determined.

On Wednesday, the top-seeded Bowie softball team rolled to a 25-1 victory against Laurel after the Spartans had advanced with a 19-5 victory against Suitland earlier in the day. The Spartans end their season at 8-11.

The Bulldogs (1701) now face Northwestern, which knocked out fourth-seeded Parkdale, 15-4, on Wednesday. Flowers held off Oxon Hill, 13-9, and will visit Roosevelt, after the Raiders shut out High Point, 16-0, on Wednesday.

Crossland bowed out of the 3A South Region softball playoffs after a 19-0 loss to fourth-seeded Calvert.

In the 2A South Region softball playoffs, top-seeded Gwynn Park lost a 5-0 decision in the quarterfinals against Patuxent. The Yellow Jackets trailed 2-0 after six innings before Patuxent added three runs in the top of the seventh. Fairmont Heights lost to McDonough, 27-0, in another 2A South quarterfinal on Wednesday.

Forestville lost its 1A South Region softball quarterfinal, 11-0, to South Carroll. Surrattsville's baseball team lost its 1A South Region quarterfinal game to Harford Tech on Wednesday, 15-0.
