A 51-year-old Rockville man was killed just before 9 p.m. on Thursday when he was struck by a car traveling west on Muddy Branch Road in Gaithersburg, according to Montgomery County Police. He is the sixth pedestrian killed in the county this year.

Jerry Joseph Sandy of the 16900 block of Briardale Road in Rockville was attempting to cross the roadway at Killarney Lane with a female companion when he was struck by a gold Toyota Camry, according to a police statement. The car was driven by Weina Zhang, 47, of the 500 block of West Diamond Avenue in Gaithersburg, who remained at the scene.

Sandy died at the scene, said Blanca Kling, a county police spokeswoman. A witness called police.

The county police’s Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating the crash, including lighting and whether alcohol may have been a factor, the statement said. There is no crosswalk at the intersection and Muddy Branch Road is separated by a grassy median with a metal guardrail at the spot.

‘‘Metal guardrails are placed in some locations precisely to avoid this type of accident,” Kling said.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or stopped to give aid is asked to call the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 301-840-2435.
