Jeanne Marie Carlen, 83, of Byesville, Ohio, formerly of Gaithersburg, died May 9, 2008, at Southeastern Med, Cambridge in Ohio.

Born Dec. 9, 1924, in Butler, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Lyle and Beatrice Kuhn McCarl.

She was the wife of Howard E. Carlen for more than 56 years.

Mrs. Carlen worked for C&P Telephone Company and retired from the Department of Energy in 1988. She was an avid sewer, knitter and reader and was a member of Main Avenue United Methodist Church.

Survivors in addition to her husband include two daughters, Shurleen Ziegler and husband, William of Middletown and Cynthia Duguette of Waxahachie, Texas; four sons, John Carlen of Rockledge, Fla., Timothy Carlen and wife, Pamela of Medical Lake, Wash., James Carlen and wife, Gloria of Jacksonville, Fla., and Bruce Carlen and wife, Deborah of Frederick; two sisters, Joan Pasch and husband, Steve of Las Vegas, Nev., and Carol McCarl of Florida; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Maxine and Paul Christie.

Funeral services were held in Ohio on Tuesday. The Rev. Jeff Lanzer officiated. Burial was in Guernsey Memory Gardens.
