Police are investigating a sex offense they believe was committed by a male nurse against a male inmate at a holding center in Rockville.

Francisco Modesto Redona, 50, of Walkersville was arrested Tuesday and charged with correctional-inmate sexual offense for the incident, which police said occurred the night of April 29. Redona was released Wednesday after posting bond.

Redona was employed at the time as a nurse at the Montgomery County Pre-Release Center on Nebel Street in Rockville.

Arthur Wallenstein, director of the Department of Correction and Rehabilitation said personnel matters are confidential and would not say if Redona remains employed at the center.

Police said a 35-year-old male inmate went to the center's medical unit to get over-the-counter medication. There, Redona ‘‘engaged in a sexual act with” the inmate, police said in a prepared statement. Police said the inmate reported the incident at least 45 minutes later, and center staff immediately called police.

Redona could not be immediately reached at a phone number listed under his name.

‘‘There has been appropriate administrative action taken and will be taken,” Wallenstein said.

The inmate has been moved to another program, Wallenstein said.
