Cpl. John Leach of the Gaithersburg Police Department has been named the department’s 2007 Supervisor of the Year, a new award instituted this year by Chief John King.

Leach set himself apart through his work as a field training officer, providing instruction on weapons use, driving skills and legal issues, King said. Leach helped lead implementation of the department’s new in-car video cameras and beat plan and helped identify training needs and other opportunities while coaching patrol officers and responding to calls.

Gaithersburg Police Lt. Thomas Campbell graduated May 2 from the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety School of Police Staff and Command in Hanover. Campbell, who was promoted to lieutenant in 2005 and was recently assigned as the department’s Special Operations Bureau Commander, was one of 32 students from Maryland, Pennsylvania and Delaware police departments to complete the program.
