Nicholas Khalil, Donna Khalil, Danielle Nigh, Lynn Yaworski and David Robinson will serve as honorary chairs for the Relay For Life of Poolesville.
They were chosen to go with the theme: "Share your HOPE with the Colors of Cancer!" Each color represents a different type of cancer.
Nicholas Khalil, 2, was diagnosed in September 2008 with Leukemia and Donna Khalil is his caregiver. Danielle Nigh is a brain tumor survivor of over five years, Lynn Yaworski is a breast and ovarian cancer survivor, and David Robinson was a caregiver for his wife who died in 2006 from ovarian cancer.

To the Waters House in Germantown for the exhibit "Something Old: Wedding Traditions of Montgomery County."
The exhibit, at the history center,12535 Milestone Manor Lane, examines the material culture related to the 19th and 20th century American wedding, with a focus on the choices made by brides, grooms and families from Montgomery County.
Take a look at the many other aspects of a wedding, from the engagement through to the Golden Anniversary. The heart of the exhibit is the display of 10 wedding gowns, one from each decade from 1870 to 1960, all worn by local brides.

Civic federation banquet
The Montgomery County Civic Federation will honor outstanding community leaders at its Annual Awards Banquet on Friday.
The event is scheduled from 6-9 p.m. at New Fortune Restaurant, 16515 S. Frederick Ave., Gaithersburg.
Luella Mast of Colesville will receive the Star Cup, the top award which is given to a federation delegate or committee for outstanding public service, according to a statement from the federation. She has been active in the League of Women Voters of Montgomery County and has served on the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Commission. She has been on the executive board of the Greater Colesville Civic Association for 18 years, and has served for 18 years on the board of the Washington, D.C. Saint Patrick's Day Parade Committee.
The Gazette Award will be given to the Parents' Coalition of Montgomery County. The Montgomery County Stormwater Partners' Network will receive the Sentinel Award for their work in behalf of environmental protection in Montgomery County.

Dragmar Tulku of the Ngagyur Nyingma Institute in India will lead a traditional empowerment ceremony at the Buddhist temple, 18400 River Road, at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Arrive by 1:30 p.m. to register. The suggested donation is $35.
Dragmar Tulku will also teach meditation to new and experienced practitioners at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the temple. The suggested donation is $20.

Conservation Awards
The Bethesda-Chevy Chase Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America will showcase six senior projects from Poolesville High School's Global Ecology Studies program. The student presenations are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Monday at the chapter's conservation farm, 20601 W. Willard Road, near Poolesville.

Memorial horse show
Riders interested in show jumping will compete and raise money during the Alex Hartner Memorial Jumper Show on May 23 at Big Easy Farm at Canterbury Farm, 20001 Bucklodge Road, Boyds. The events begin at 9 a.m.
All horse show proceeds will go to Butler's equestrian program.
Alex Hartner, 18, was killed in a car crash in North Carolina in 2008. She acquired a passion for horses at Butler School in Germantown. Her parents, Jane and George Hartner, raised more than $40,000 at a benefit show they hosted in October in North Carolina.
Alex' trainer, Adrian Ford, is hosting the show along with clients who rode with Alex.

Wine tasting at the mansion
The Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce celebrates its 6th Annual Wine Tasting from 5:30 to 7: 30 p.m. Thursday, at the Kentlands Mansion, 320 Kent Square Road.
Chef Bryan of Chef Bryan's Kitchen in Gaithersburg's Kentlands neighborhood will provide food to complement fine wines provided by PB Dye Golf Club in Ijamsville. The Gaithersburg Hilton Hotel will host a charity bake sale to benefit the Give Kids the World Foundation. Cakes by Leslie and Custom Cake Design and home-baked goods by Hilton employees will be for sale.

Lace up for the animals
Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary will hold its 6th annual Run for the Animals in May at Wheaton Regional Park, 2002 Shorefield Road.
The day will kick-off at 8:30 a.m. Sunday at the Wheaton park and will include food and raffles with prizes for dogs and humans. The event is a fundraiser for the Poolesville-based nonprofit.
Registration for the 5K Run and Fun Walk is $25 or $28 on the day of the race. Walkers can choose to hoof it for 1 mile or 1.7 miles, and dogs are welcome to join but are not permitted in the 5K run.
Runners can bring old shoes to the race site to be donated to Nike's Reuse a shoe program. Shoes will be shipped to the Nike recycling center that turns athletic shoes into reusable products like zippers and soles of shoes. Also, all bibs are made of seeds so you can plant them after the race.

Here kitty, kitty
"Kitten season" has arrived at the Montgomery County Animal Shelter, and the Montgomery County Humane Society is receiving kittens by the boxloads, according to a statement from the society.
"Kitten season" is the unofficial name for the mating season for cats. It begins in late spring and runs to early fall.
To help find homes for cats and kittens, MCHS is hosting a Cat Adoption Open House noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at the county animal shelter, 14645 Rothgeb Drive, Rockville. Discounts are available on cats 7 years old and older. HomeAgain will, for free, implant microchips in for cats adopted during the open house.
