Washington Grove elections SaturdaySome Washington Grove election officials expect a more robust turnout as the town hosts its first contested mayoral election in more than 17 years Saturday. Eight-term incumbent Mayor John Compton, 58, is defending his seat from first-time challenger John Tomlin, 61. Marida Hines, 51, and former mayor Charlie Challstrom, 56, also are on the ballot for two uncontested Town Council seats. Voting is 4-7 p.m. Saturday at McCathran Hall, 300 Grove Ave. The town’s annual meeting, to include topics such as the budget and council reports, also is scheduled for 8 p.m. at McCathran Hall. The result should be announced by or before 7:30 p.m., said Mary Kay Du Bois, a supervisor of town elections. Compton is co-president of Gaithersburg-based biomedical company GeneDx, and served on the Town Council for three years prior to his election as mayor. Compton has said he would like to see to fruition some of the ongoing issues, such as a part-time code inspector and ensuring a legal foothold to protect the Casey Field from development. His challenger, Tomlin, in 2004 retired from his human resources director position with the Carderock Division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center. He served on the Town Council from 2002 to 2005. Tomlin has said he intends to strengthen communication with nearby cities and introduce open hours at town hall to hear residents’ concerns. McCathran Hall was packed during an hour-long candidate meet-and-greet session April 18. Candidates introduced themselves, then fielded questions from 11 residents, with topics such as historical preservation, walking trail maintenance and limiting oversized home building. The mayor is elected for a one-year term, while the six council positions are held on staggered, three-year terms. Both positions are unpaid.
