More than 30 female students who comprise the Rose Court at Ernest Everett Just Middle School in Mitchellville were recognized May 1 for their academic achievements and community service during the 2007-2008 school year at an awards ceremony at Martin’s Crosswinds in Greenbelt.
The Rose Court is a club at the school that helps prepare high-achieving students at the Mitchellville school for high school. All members of the Rose Court maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or above throughout the school year and helped to raise money for the Red Cross. Members also held a toy drive in December and a food drive during Thanksgiving, said LaRae Dudley, the cotillion’s chairwoman.
French Immersion students honored for exemplary work
A second-grader and two third-grade students from Robert Goddard French Immersion were recently recognized as high scorers on the American Association of Teachers of French National Contest administered in late February and early March.
According to a press release from the Seabrook school, second-grader Naomi Diarra and third-grader Zeynabou Diallo, both of Lanham and third-grader Ayat Abi of Glenn Dale will attend a celebratory luncheon at the Café de Paris in Columbia where they will be presented with their prizes from the Maryland Chapter of AATF.
For the contest, French students throughout the country take a written test and compete against students in their same grade for prizes such as certificates, medals, books, trips and scholarships, according to the AATF’s Web site.
Other students from the school who scored well on the test were: Manuel Ayala Sapelli of College Park, Alexandra Ahearn of Riverdale, Vivian Kramer of Hyattsville, Julia Tartaro of Greenbelt, Habdel Coulibably of Greenbelt, Jordan Jackson of Laurel, Isabella Tilley of Hyattsville, Emma McTague of Hyattsville, Sophie Bernheisel of Greenbelt, Molly Kincaid of Brentwood, Shayla Norris of Bowie, Abram Shaw of Berwyn Heights, Teresa Smith of Greenbelt and Marie Toure of Adelphi.
Lanham studentreceives scholarship
Courtney Long of Lanham Christian School has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship through the through the Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program. She was one of 81 students at Maryland high schools to receive the scholarship, which is given to students who exhibit leadership skills, have high academic achievement and show a commitment to community service. Nationally, 1,965 high school seniors received $1,000 Comcast Leaders and Achievers scholarships this year, according to a Comcast press release.
Mitchellville student wins award for inspirational art
Jillian Nicole Wright, 10, a fifth-grader at St. Mary of the Assumption School in Upper Marlboro received second place in the fifth-grade division of this year’s national ‘‘Try Prayer! It Works!” contest.
Jillian submitted artwork showing her admiration for St. Clare, because of the way the saint dedicated herself to caring for the sick and the poor.
The contest is a national competition that ‘‘encourages students to express their faith through art, poetry and prose,” according to a press release from Holy Cross Family Ministries, which sponsored the competition.
Musical productions come to PGCC this weekend
Prince George’s Community College will be presenting two musical productions Friday and Saturday on the school’s Largo campus.
The college is hosting a ‘‘1980s Hip Hop Bop” from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Friday in the Largo Student Center. Participants are encouraged to wear ‘‘big hair” and ‘‘Miami Vice suits” or other memorabilia to highlight 1980s fashion, according to a PGCC press release. There will be a dance contest and such 1980s-era musicians as Prince, Madonna and Michael Jackson will be featured. Admission is free for PGCC students with school identification and $3 for everyone else.
Led by the college’s music director, Charles Ellis, the Prince George’s Philharmonic will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday on campus at the Hallam Theatre in the Queen Anne Fine Arts Building. Admission is free for PGCC students with school identification and audiences 18 years of age and younger. Tickets for adults are $20 and $18 for seniors. Bowie High student receives Comcast scholarship
Eighty-one Maryland high school seniors received Comcast Foundation’s $1,000 scholarships this year, including one Bowie High School student.
Avery Jones of Bowie High School received a Leaders and Achievers scholarship for his leadership skills, academic achievement and commitment to community service. Across the nation, 1,965 students received these scholarships.
Belair Estate hostsMother’s Day tea
The Friends of Belair Estate will host a Mother’s Day Tea at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Belair Mansion. The three course tea will feature traditional tea treats such as finger sandwiches, scones, jam and cream and desserts. After tea, participants can tour the estate, which served as the 1745 home of Anne Tasker Ogle. Tickets cost $23 per person and reservations and advance payment are required. Turner honors Samuel Ogle Science Bowl team
Three eighth-graders from Samuel Ogle Middle School were honored by Prince George’s County Councilwoman Ingrid M. Turner (D-Dist. 4) of Bowie for their team’s second-place finish in the 2008 Prince George’s County Public Schools Science Bowl.
On April 15, Olivia Guerrieri, Maxwell Gollin and Brady Collier were presented with certificates of recognition for their work and participation.
Teacher and science team advisor Jeanell Maxwell said her students were humbled by the recognition and appreciated Turner’s presentation.
The Science Bowl is a game show in which students from schools across the county compete against each other to test their science knowledge.
Bowie hostsforeclosure workshop
The City of Bowie will host a foreclosure workshop from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. At the workshop, residents in danger of foreclosure will receive information referrals and free, one-on-one legal advice about their situations.
