Paint Branch High School senior Sehar Sabir has been named the national finalist of the Principal’s Leadership Award Scholarship, co-sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals and Herff Jones Inc.
He was selected from among nine regional winners as the national finalist and will receive an additional $7,000 scholarship, making the total scholarship award Sabir has won $8,500.
‘‘We are very proud of Sehar and of all her accomplishments here at Paint Branch,” Principal Jeanette Dixon said in a prepared statement.
Participating high school principals from across the country could nominate one senior high student to compete in this year’s program. Winners were selected on the basis of leadership skills, participation in service organizations and clubs, achievements in the arts and sciences, employment experience and academic record. They also were required to write an essay.
While at Paint Branch, Sabir has been the president of the Student Government Association, the vice president of the National Honor Society and the opinions editor of the Mainstream, the Paint Branch school newspaper. She has also been a Senate page in the 2008 session of the Maryland General Assembly, and participated in the Washington Post’s Ninth Annual High School Writing Seminar and Scholarship Program this spring.
In addition, Sabir was selected to receive the Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship and is a finalist for a National Honor Society scholarship.
This fall, Sabir plans to attend the University of Maryland, College Park, Honors Program and double major in journalism and government and politics.
‘Leading Ladies’ at Sherwood
This weekend, Sherwood High School’s drama department, Creating Awesome Sherwood Theatre, will present ‘‘Leading Ladies,” a comedy about two down-on-their-luck actors who try to pass themselves off as the long-lost nieces of a dying wealthy old matron.
The production will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the Ertzman Theatre, located on the school’s campus at 300 Olney-Sandy Spring Road in Sandy Spring.

Magruder FootballGolf Classic on May 9
The Col. Zadok Magruder High School football program will hold its second annual golf tournament Friday at Hampshire Greens golf course.
The format will be captain’s choice best ball beginning with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. with the driving range opening at noon for players.
All proceeds from the tournament will go to the school.
Cost per player is $125 and sponsoring a hole is $100.
The event will feature several contests, including four hole-in-one chances with a $10,000 first prize, closest to the pin, longest drive and putting. Prizes will go to the top teams.

Sherwood Pomsto hold camp May 10
The 2007-2008 Montgomery County Champion Sherwood High School Pom Squad will hold a Pom Day Camp for all girls from grades kindergarten through high school from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Sherwood High School.
Registration will be at 8:30 a.m. in the gymnasium. The cost of the camp is $25, and includes pompons, snacks, a photo souvenir and instruction in pompom skills, techniques and a dance routine.
At 11:30 a.m., parents and fans are invited to a recital to showcase the girls’ work, as well as a performance by the undefeated 2007-2008 Pom Squad.
T-shirts, uniforms, pompoms and souvenirs will be available for purchase. The Poms’ Relay for Life team, the Lifesavers, will also host a bake sale to benefit their fundraising for the Cure of Cancer.
Spring Fair this weekat Sherwood Elementary
Sherwood Elementary School will hold its annual Spring Fair 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, rain or shine.
The fair will feature a moonbounce, games, prizes, face painting, arts and crafts, a dunk tank, pony rides, plant sale, used book sale, food, cotton candy and more.

Students in the Montgomery County Students Automotive Trades and Information Technology Foundations will hold a sale of student-refurbished cars and computers 9-11 a.m. Saturday at Thomas Edison High School of Technology.
The Maryland-inspected vehicles have been reconditioned by students enrolled in the auto trades program, and computers have been refurbished by students in the information technology programs.

‘The Music Man Jr.’marching into Loiederman
A. Mario Loiederman Middle School for the Creative and Performing Arts in Wheaton will present ‘‘The Music Man Jr.,” a musical comedy following fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill and his visit to River City, Iowa, for one weekend in May.
The production will be presented at 7 p.m. May 16, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. May 17 and at 2 p.m. May 18 at the school, located at 12701 Goodhill Road in Wheaton.
Tickets are $4 for students and seniors and $6 for adults, which can be purchased at the door.
International Community Festival at Rock Terrace
Rock Terrace School in Rockville will be host its annual International Community Festival 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 17.
The event will feature Chinese performers and music, arts and crafts, a children’s area, food court and a flea market.
The event is free to the public.
