The CSX train that struck and killed an unknown pedestrian Wednesday morning was stopped at the Garrett Park station for several hours as police investigated the incident.
A CSX freight struck and killed a pedestrian about 6:20 a.m. Wednesday near the Garrett Park MARC station.

The victim, a man whose name has not yet been released, was struck in an industrial area off the 4900 block of Wyaconda Road. He was found along the tracks about 1,000 feet north of the Garrett Park MARC station, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Pete Piringer.

According to police, the train engineer saw the pedestrian and blew the train's whistle several times and applied the breaks, but the man did not react. The train could not be stopped in time and struck the pedestrian.

The incident disrupted morning commuter rail service on MARC's Brunswick line, with passengers getting off the southbound trains at Rockville. Metro honored MARC tickets for commuters to complete their trips, said Jawauna Greene, spokeswoman for the Maryland Transit Administration.

The MARC service resumed shortly before 9 a.m. with trains running at a reduced speed for safety reasons since investigators were still in the area looking for evidence and witnesses, she said.

The victim's name will be released after family members have been notified, police said. An autopsy has been scheduled at the Medical Examiner's Office in Baltimore. The cause and manner of death remain under investigation.
