A Kensington school was evacuated Wednesday morning due to a gas leak, according to Pete Piringer, a spokesman for the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service.

About 35-40 fire and rescue personnel responded to The Holy Cross Academy, located at 4920 Strathmore Ave., after receiving a call around 9:30 a.m. this morning to report the gas leak.

Fire and rescue teams, including hazmat personnel, remained on the scene Wednesday morning monitoring the gas leak, which was still active, Piringer said.

‘‘The gas seemed to be getting into the school building. The school was evacuated as a precaution,” Piringer said.

No other homes or businesses in the area have been affected, Piringer said.

According to Piringer, the gas leak happened after a backhoe struck a 4-inch gas line located on a driveway leading to the school from Strathmore Ave., just outside the main entrance to the school. Piringer said he was unsure what kind of work was underway when the gas line was struck.

Shortly after 10 a.m., the gas company remained on the scene, and expected to have the situation under control within an hour, Piringer said. ‘‘At this point, we're continuing to monitor things,” Piringer said.
