Expansion for Barnesville cemetery gets approvalBarnesville’s Appeals Committee unanimously voted last week to allow St. Mary’s Church and Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima to expand its cemetery by 300 plots. The special exception permits St. Mary’s to add one acre of land that was donated to the Catholic church by a parishioner about 10 years ago to its 2-acre cemetery, which is rapidly running out of room. This is the first expansion since the cemetery was dedicated in 1820. Four people attended the April 25 meeting in addition to the three-member committee, according to town Commissioner and committee chairman Luke Fedders. Several conditions were included with the approval, according to the town’s Web site. The cemetery must not have large machinery stored on site, night lighting or expanded parking, and landscaping or other screening should separate the cemetery from adjacent properties. Maintenance and upkeep should be consistent with that of the main cemetery, and hours of operation are limited to 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., not including visitations.
