Student representative will be elected todayCounty administrators honored by Maryland Association of Secondary School PrincipalsThe school board will have a new student member after elections today. This year’s student member, Sarah Horvitz, will serve until June 30. The new board member — Will Bucher, a junior at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, or Ben Moskowitz, a junior at Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda — will take over on July 1. Bucher, 17, wants county money to be used for special education and English for Speakers of Other Languages programs. He has always thought about running for the school board. Bucher, who is dyslexic, said recently that he wants to help change some policy at the high school level. Moskowitz, 17, says his experience with student associations make him the best choice for the school board. He has worked as a special elections administrator for the county and with student government while at Tilden Middle School in Rockville. Administrators honored Two principals and an assistant principal have recently been honored by the Maryland Association of Secondary School Principals. Moreno Carrasco, principal of Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, was named High School Principal of the Year, while Nelson McLeod, principal of Newport Mill Middle School in Kensington, received the Middle School Principal of the Year award. Earlier this school year, Christopher Berry, assistant principal of James Hubert Blake High School in Silver Spring, was named High School Assistant Principal of the Year. The three administrators now are eligible for national awards. Carrasco was called a strong leader. He and his staff have helped increase the number of students taking Advanced Placement classes, securing the school a ranking among the top 100 high schools in the nation, according to Newsweek magazine. McLeod’s school has become one of the highest performing middle schools in the county system. Almost 68 percent of eighth-graders are taking Algebra 1 or higher level math. The school was recently named a finalist in the National Schools of Character awards competition. Berry has helped create James Hubert Blake’s improvement plan and secure grants totaling more than $800,000 for the school’s smaller learning community program.
