Four people have been hospitalized with serious injuries after the car they were traveling in lost control and struck a curb, tree and several parked cars along Randolph Road in Wheaton early this morning.

The crash occurred around 4:25 a.m. today when a driver of a 2005 silver Toyota Corolla carrying three other passengers was traveling eastbound on Randolph Road at what witnesses said was at a high speed, said Pete Piringer, a spokesman for the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service.

However, the reason why the driver lost control is still under investigation, said Lucille Baur, a spokeswoman for Montgomery County Police.

The driver was 21-year-old Melvin Rocha-Zalvala of the 700 block of Clopper Road in Gaithersburg. The other passengers included front-seat passenger Mario Rodriguez, 21, of the 11000 block of Columbia Pike in Silver Spring, back-seat passenger Iris Santos, 19, also of the 11000 block of Columbia Pike in Silver Spring, and another back-seat passenger, Henry Rodas, 19, of the 1100 block of Agnew Avenue in Rockville. Rodriguez and Santos are siblings.

Roca-Zalvala and Santos, who was ejected from the vehicle, were listed in critical condition at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. Rodriguez, who was the only occupant wearing a seatbelt, sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries and is being treated at Suburban Hospital, Bethesda. Rodas also has serious but non-life threatening injuries and is being treated at Prince George’s Hospital Center, Cheverly.

A helicopter had to land at nearby Wheaton High School to airlift at least one of the victims, and Randolph Road was closed for about two hours following the accident this morning, Piringer said.

When the driver lost control, the car hit a curb, a speed limit sign, a tree in the front yard of a home in the 3600 block of Randolph Road and two parked cars before flipping, according to police.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to call the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 301-840-2435.
