Next Montgomery schools superintendent to be announced Monday
Appointment will be conditional,' pending final contract negotiations
The next superintendent for Montgomery County Public Schools will be announced Monday evening at the Board of Education's meeting in Rockville.
The school system announced Thursday evening that the replacement for Superintendent of Schools Jerry D. Weast, set to retire June 30, will be named at the school board's meeting beginning at 7 p.m. at central offices, 850 Hungerford Drive.
Weast's replacement will be hired on a conditional basis, the school system said, and contingent on a final contract agreement. The written approval of the selected candidate from state Superintendent of Schools Nancy S. Grasmick, who is also retiring this year, is also required.
School board members have refused to identify the candidates being considered, even though other school systems searching for new superintendents provide lists of finalists for their open positions. They have maintained that they do not wish to hurt the candidates' standing with their current employers, and that the best candidates tend to be employed elsewhere.
However, during the search process, which began last fall after Weast announced in August that he would retire this year, board members have indicated that they prefer candidates with experience in leading relatively large school systems.
On April 12, the school system announced that a Community Committee consisting of various groups' representatives would conduct interviews with three finalists, who then would be interviewed by the school board before it selected a preferred candidate.
