It’s not just the residents who are going to get ‘burnt’I wonder where Frederick County officials intend to build a waste-to-energy incinerator. The Northeast Maryland Waste Disposal Authority has indicated that the Reichs Ford landfill is the selection of choice. The residents who live nearby this site will get ‘‘burnt” again, especially if there is consideration of permitting a multi-regional approach. The county plans to spend more than $4 million to upgrade Reichs Ford Road. The county operates a temporary transfer station on this inadequate road. I hope this isn’t a premonition to what’s to come. I just hope that the Frederick Board of County Commissioners will plan better for the disposal of our solid waste so as to not become a nuisance to property owners. The commissioners have the option of siting a transfer station and resource recovery park or another disposal facility on an appropriate site in an industrial area, which would permit seven-day-a-week access 24 hours per day while saving $4 million in road improvements. Let’s aggressively recycle, reuse construction and demolition debris, divert from the landfill, initiate a pay-as-you-throw system, and implement a ‘‘bargain barn” where residents can drop off items that still can be used. Visit www.cvswmd.org to view more possibilities of zero-waste initiatives. There are so many other environmentally friendly avenues other than waste-to-energy incineration.
