Player of the Year
Jabari Brown, Walkersville, Sr., F
The 6-foot 3-inch widebody showed plenty of versatility for a player of his stature. Could drain 3-pointers and bang inside for points with equal ability. Averaged 19.8 points per game and 7.9 rebounds per contest for the 19-5 Lions, helping them capture the MVAL Piedmont Conference regular season title.
Coach of the Year
Dan Wagner, Tuscarora
Led the Titans to an overall record of 17-9, and a trip to the Class 3A West Region championship game, where they were ousted by Bethesda-Chevy Chase. Directed Tuscarora to the Middletown Holiday Tournament title as well as the Monocacy Valley Athletic League’s Chesapeake Conference crown.
First Team
Jordan Dixon. Walkersville, Jr., F
Averaged 16.0 points per game and 8.1 rebounds per game for the Lions. Formed a potent duo with Brown inside the paint.
Matt Duerr, Century, Jr., C
Was the Knights’ go-to inside player offensively, and was an intmidating force on the defensive side with his 6 foot 7 frame. Averaged 14. 5 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.3 blocked shots.
Troy King, St. John’s-Catholic Prep, Jr., F
Posted 18.5 points per game for the Vikings, who play in one of the toughest high school league’s in the nation—the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association’s A Conference.
Michael Oursler, Middletown, Sr., G
Tossed in 16.2 points per contest for the Knights. Helped his team advance to the 2A West Region finals. Will focus on academics at the University of Maryland-College Park.
Bruce Richardson, Glenelg, Sr., F
The 6-3 standout averaged 18.7 points and 5.5 rebounds. Like Oursler, plans to forgo basketball and attend college at Maryland.
Antoine Smith, Tuscarora, Sr., G
Athletic upperclassman led his team in scoring at 17.7 per game and chipped in with two assists per outing. Will attend prep school at Mercersburg Academy.
Andrew Simpson, Brunswick, Sr., G
Led the Railroaders in scoring (14.7), assists (3.6) and was co-leader in steals (2.1) Will play at NCAA Division III Juniata College (Pa.) next season.
Matty Thompson, Catoctin, Sr., F
Led the Cougars in scoring (15.9), rebounding (4.9) and steals (2.5) while handing out 2.9 assists per game.
Colton WeaverLiberty, Sr., G
All-around athlete led the Lions in scoring (15.6) while averaging a team best 4.2 rebounds. The first team All-Gazette quarterback will play football at Franlin and Marshall College (Pa.).
Second team
Guy Barnes, Frederick, Sr., G
Averaged 13.7 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.
Kevin Berrigan, MSD, Sr., G
Totaled 15.3 points and an area best 7.6 assists per outing.
Dereck Holland, Tuscarora, Sr., F
Despite missing half of the season due to injury, averaged 17.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.
Greg Hunt, St. John’s-CP, Sr., G
Posted 12.5 points and 3.6 assists per ballgame.
Sherard Johnson, New Life, Jr., F
Averaged a double double (14.5 points and 10.7 rebounds per game) for the Maryland Christian Schools Tournament champs.
Brian KiddTuscarora Sr., G
Caught fire during the playoffs, helping propel the Titans to the region final. Averaged 11 points per contest.
Ryan Miller,Liberty, Sr., G
Enjoyed a solid all-around campaign with 13.3 points and 4.2 rebounds per game.
Scott Morris, Walkersville, Jr., G
Standout sophomore showed all-around game (13.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.9 assists per contest).
Justin Stone, Brunswick, Sr., F
Nearly averaged a double double (10.5 points, 9.9 rebounds) for the Railroaders.
Winston Towns, Middletown, Sr., F
Outstanding defender averaged 12.5 points and 6.4 rebounds.
