Destination ImagiNation teams qualify for state tournamentSeveral county schools have qualified for the state tournament in Destination ImagiNation, a team problem-solving tournament. In the regional competition, teams of five to seven members solve team challenges. In the event called ‘‘CSI:DI,” one of two teams from Burtonsville Elementary School finished first and qualified for the state tournament April 21 in Towson. Jones Lane Elementary was second, and also moves to the state competition. Other county schools that competed were Piney Branch, Clearspring, Burning Tree, Garrett Park, Cold Spring and S. Christa McAuliffe elementaries. At the middle school ‘‘CSI:DI” competition, Gaithersburg Middle School finished first and Takoma Park and Ridgeview middle schools tied for second. All three teams qualified for the state tournament. Other county squads included teams from Herbert Hoover, Parkland and Montgomery Village. In the elementary school ‘‘Card-DI-ology” event, Burnt Mills Elementary finished first and moves to the state competition. Woodlin Elementary also competed. At the middle school level, teams from Takoma Park and Herbert Hoover moved on to the states. In the ‘‘DIrect Flight” event, Cold Spring and Garrett Park elementaries took first and second and the spots in the state tournament. Other teams from the county included Maryvale, New Hampshire Estates⁄Oak View, and Woodlin. For middle schools, Herbert Hoover, Eastern and Parkland all qualified for the state tournament, finishing first, second and third, respectively. In the ‘‘Round About Courage” event, a team from McAuliffe Elementary and teams from Benjamin Banneker, Takoma Park and Montgomery Village middle schools advanced to the state tournament. A squad from Parkland also competed. And in the ‘‘Switching TraDItions” event, state qualifiers were Viers Mill Elementary, Ridgeview and Eastern middle school and Quince Orchard High School earned state berths. Two other teams, the Swashbucklers and Super Team, also earned state spots. Poetry slamat Blair Students at Montgomery Blair High School will hold a poetry slam 7 p.m. April 20 at the school’s media center, 51 University Blvd. E., Silver Spring. Students will have three minutes on stage to perform original poems without any props or musical accompaniment. The students will be judged by their peers and teachers. Blair Fair, PTSAsilent auction planned The annual Blair Fair and PTSA Silent Auction will be held 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. April 20 at Montgomery Blair High School, 51 University Blvd. E., Silver Spring. The event will feature music, performances, activities and food. The silent auction will offer hundreds of items such as home-cooked gourmet dinners, tickets to sport and cultural events and weekend vacations. Call 301-649-2800. Lee Comedy Club to hold annual event The Col. E. Brooke Lee Comedy Club production, ‘‘Snicker ... Giggle ... Cackle ... SNARF!” will be held 7:30 p.m. April 20 and 21 at E. Brooke Lee Middle School in Wheaton, and features one act of comedy sketches and a new one-act musical, ‘‘No Child Left ... Service academy forum open to students A forum for high school students interested in applying to a service academy will be held 7:30 p.m. April 30 at the Rockville Public Library, second floor meeting room, 21 Maryland Avenue, Rockville. The event, held by U.S. Rep. Christopher Van Hollen Jr. (D-Dist. 8) of Kensington will host representatives from the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, U.S. Military Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy.
