Scouts’ cookies welcome troopsGirl Scout Troop 81802, which draws its members from the Mother Seton School in Emmitsburg, recently handed out 370 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to soldiers returning to BWI Airport from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The scouts sold the boxes to people who donated them right back for the troops, said advisor Kerri Eyler. ‘‘All you had to do was tell people it was for returning soldiers and they were all for it,“ Eyler of Woodsboro said Tuesday. Girls in the troop come from all over northern Frederick County as well as lower Pennsylvania and western Carroll County, she said. Scouts Maggie Cole, Anna Eyler, Taylor Garner, Samantha Nigida, Veronica Smaldone, Jenna van Volkenburgh and Marah Williams “would just hand out the cookies as the soldiers were walking,“ Eyler said, adding that the soldiers were clearly gratified. The girls chose to benefit Operation Welcome Home, a Maryland charity that meets U.S. military troops returning from Iraq or Afghanistan at the airport, for this year’s Gift of Caring program, which is tied to their cookie sales. Eyler’s husband, Terry Eyler, generated a huge number of sales when he announced the program at a gathering of the Thurmont Conservation and Sportsman’s Club, she said. Each box costs $3.50, which means the girls did $1,295 in sales. Joan Williams also advises the scout troop. For more information about Operation Welcome Home, visit www.operationwelcomehomemd.org. Businessman honorslocal students John Chaney wants local students to reach their full potential. The Frederick native and loan advisor for Immediate Mortgage in Urbana held an event at the Clara Harris Community Center in the city’s Sagner neighborhood on Saturday to honor 15 young students who improved their grades and earned a place on the honor roll at their schools. The recognition started when Chaney promised a treat to two friends of the family if they improved their grades. The idea grew as friends and family members recommended more students who needed a little academic push. Chaney, a 1985 graduate of Frederick High School, said he hopes to partner with more community and school organizations to make the student recognition event a regular occurrence for all young people, but especially minority students who grew up in the same Sagner community he did.
