Radio personality Martin Goldsmith will be the guest speaker at Congregation Tikvat Israel's annual Yom Hashoa Commemoration at 8 p.m. April 20.
Goldsmith, author of "The Inextinguishable Symphony: A True Story of Music and Love in Nazi Germany," will discuss his parents, who were members of the Jewish Kulturbund, an all-Jewish performing arts ensemble maintained by the Nazis between 1933 and 1941.
The program, which is free and open to the public, will also feature a short remembrance ceremony with members of Silver Spring Presbyterian Church and Congregation Shaare Tefila. The church and Tikvat Israel share the custom of staging a joint Yom Hashoa event, which alternates each year between the two sites.
Goldsmith served as the host of "Performance Today", National Public Radio's daily classical music program. He works as program director of XM Classics for Sirius/XM Satellite Radio based in Washington, D.C.

College to offer Holocaust Commemoration program
Montgomery College's annual Holocaust Commemoration will be held on Yom Hashoah, the "Day of Remembrance" of the six-million who died, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. April 21 in the Theatre Arts Building on the Rockville campus.
The program will feature two Holocaust survivors, as well as Mohammed Yahya, a refugee from the Darfur region of Sudan and founder of Damanga Coalition for Freedom and Democracy.
Yahya was part of the first human rights group to alert the international community to human rights abuses in western Sudan, college officials reported. Readers can learn about Yahya at http://www.damanga.org/.
The commemoration will also include brief biographies of some victims of the Holocaust, a candle-lighting ceremony involving representatives of Montgomery County's survivor groups and music.
A partial exhibit of "Portraits of Life: Holocaust Survivors of Montgomery County," a documentary projects created to tell the stories of survivors who have lived in and around Montgomery County, will be shown at the commemoration.
The event is free and open to the public.
Local author to discuss Lincoln's assassination
Author Anthony Pitch will discuss his book, "They Have Killed Papa Dead! The Road to Ford's Theatre, Abraham Lincoln's Murder, and the Rage for Vengeance" at 7 p.m. April 23 in the first-floor meeting room of the Rockville Library, 21 Maryland Ave.

Art contest highlights pets
The Montgomery County Humane Society is challenging young people to illustrate what they are learning about animal care in a pair of contests.
Students in grades 2-5 can show their creativity and compassion for animals in an art poster contest and students in grades 6-12 will show their creativity in a YouTube video PSA contest.
The younger students are asked to illustrate one of the "Rules to Love By: 10 Commandments of Responsible Pet Ownership."
The older students are asked to create a 60-second PSA that also illustrates the "Rules to Love By."
Two $50 gift certificates will be awarded to the winning videographers: one "Viewer's Choice" award and "Professional's Choice" award.
All entries must be submitted by April 15 at one of four locations:
-Long Branch Community Center/KidZone, 8700 Piney Branch Road in Silver Spring;
-Fixation Marketing, 4340 East-West Highway, Suite 200 in Bethesda;
-VisArts at Rockville, 155 Gibbs St., second floor, Rockville Town Square; and
-Johns Hopkins University/Montgomery County Campus, Gilchrist Hall, 9601 Medical Center Drive in Rockville.
Winning artwork from the contest will be turned into posters that will be distributed to local elementary schools.

The Richard Montgomery Booster Club will hold the second annual Mike Curtis Open May 11 at Hampshire Greens in Ednor.
Curtis is a 1961 graduate of Richard Montgomery and was an all-pro player for the Baltimore Colts.

Andy J. Chung has received a four-year Army ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) scholarship to attend Virginia Military Institute in Lexington. The mission of ROTC is to provide future officers with leadership qualities needed in the regular Army and the Reserve component. After graduation, the cadet will be required to serve in the military for eight years. Chung will receive a degree in history at Virginia Military Institute. He is the son of Woo Chol and Ye Jin Chung of Derwood and is a 2008 graduate of Col. Zadok Magruder High School in Derwood.
Volunteers needed to help disabled adults manage money
The Mental Health Association of Montgomery County's Representative Payee Program is recruiting volunteers to provide money management services for disabled adults in the upcounty.
Volunteers spend about six hours per month paying routine bills and budgeting for an individual in need of financial supervision.
Volunteers must be at least 21 years old and be well organized, have good basic math skills and be able to work with clients who have a variety of disabling conditions.

Jubilee Association
seeks volunteers
The Jubilee Association of Maryland seeks volunteers to help make a difference in the lives of adults with developmental disabilities.
The adults in Jubilee Association care live in group homes throughout the county and require volunteers to help with activities and maintain the homes.
Volunteers spend four hours a month of one-on-one time with the Jubilee Association members.
Volunteers can also host parties and craft events, or provide administrative support to make the homes more attractive.
