Takoma Park MS wins math tourneyThe Takoma Park Middle School Math Team won the Maryland State Mathcounts competition, held at Johns Hopkins University March 30. The competition involved teams from about 50 public and private schools throughout the state, according to a news release from the Takoma Park team. The members of the Takoma Park Team are Mario Choi, Jason Hyun, C. J. Argue and Andrew Das Sarma. Choi, Argue, and Das Sarma are in eighth grade, while Hyun is a sixth-grader. The coach of the team is Sarah Manchester, a mathematics teacher at Takoma Park Middle School. In the individual competition, Takoma Park students took four of the top five places, with Choi finishing first, sixth-grader Sam Zbarsky third, Hyun fourth, and eighth-grader Peter Weng fifth. Second place was captured by Linus Ulysses Hamilton, a seventh-grader at Hyattsville Middle School. The top four finishers (Choi, Hamilton, Zbarsky and Hyun) are the members of the Maryland State Team, and Weng is the alternate. The Maryland State Team will take part May 10-13 in the 24th annual National Mathcounts Competition in Fort Worth, Texas. Manchester will be the coach.. Poetry slamat Blair Students at Montgomery Blair High School will hold a poetry slam 7 p.m. April 20 at the school’s media center, 51 University Blvd. E., Silver Spring. Students will have three minutes on stage to perform original poems without any props or musical accompaniment. The students will be judged by their peers and teachers.
