SHA postpones major Beltway project

The State Highway Administration has postponed the scheduled placement of structural steel along the Capital Beltway at Branch Avenue because of storms forecast this weekend in the Washington, D.C. area, according to an SHA news release.

The SHA is working to reschedule the setting of 12 20-ton, curved steel beams and mobilizing of five massive cranes needed to lift and hold the beams in place. Setting steel on bridges requires dry conditions and winds less than 25 mph, the SHA said.

‘‘We're working on a new date, but we wanted to get the word out as quickly as we could,” SHA spokesman Charles Gischler said. ‘‘There are a lot of factors that go into rescheduling, but we do want to keep everything on track and get it done sooner than later.”

The $52 million Beltway project began in March 2006 and is expected to be completed by summer 2009, weather permitting.

Also this weekend, the Beltway's Outer Loop (I-95 North⁄I-495 East) will be reduced from four to three lanes beginning at the Eisenhower Connector Exit this weekend, the SHA said. The Outer Loop currently transitions from four to three lanes 1 mile farther east at the Telegraph Road Exit. The extension of this three-lane configuration to the Eisenhower Connector Exit is needed to accommodate the Telegraph Road Interchange reconstruction.

The Telegraph Road Interchange effort, valued at $236 million, is the final major contract of the $2.5 billion Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project. For more information, go to www.wilsonbridge.com.
