A Hyattsville teen won the $20,000 first prize in an art competition sponsored by a Silver Spring apartment community.
Kyle Bancroft, 19, won the competition by submitting original art for Enclave Silver Spring's permanent art collection. There were over 200 entries and the winners were announced March 26. There were also awards for elementary, middle and high school students. Bancroft is a freshman in college and won the overall top prize.

family crisis center
Franklin's Restaurant in Hyattsville is hosting a fundraiser Monday to support the Prince George's County Family Crisis Center. Diners who mention the fundraiser will be able to donate 20 percent of the proceeds from their meals to the Brentwood-based crisis center, which helps victims of domestic violence. Franklin's is located at 5121 Baltimore Ave. in Hyattsville.
Hyattsville Middle students make notable achievements
Hyattsville Middle School seventh-grader Cristeen Anyanwu won the first-place award in the original poetry/spoken word category in the annual History Youth Oratorical and Arts Contest. The Feb. 28 contest was sponsored by the Xi Zeta Omega chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
Eighth-grader Caleb Cook was selected as a Ben Carson Scholar for 2009. Cook had at least a 3.75 grade point average and showed a commitment to his community in order to be named a scholar. He received $1,000 for his college savings fund, a medal, certificate and trophy. He will be honored at the Carson Scholars Fund 13th annual award banquet April 26 in Baltimore. The organization named a total of 3,900 fourth through 11th-graders as scholars.

Jonathan P. Hamm, a 2008 graduate from Northwestern High School, graduated basic military training at the Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.
Hamm is the son of Hyattsville resident Norma Hamm and the grandson of Hyattsville resident Mary Stevenson.
Hamm spent six weeks training in the Air Force mission and organization, drill marches, physical fitness, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises and human relations.
Brentwood workshop

A free workshop, "12 Simple Steps to Starting a Vegetable Garden," will show attendees how to grow fresh and organic food. The workshop will take place in Brentwood's Town Hall at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. The workshop is part of the Grow It Eat It campaign, a joint venture between the Maryland Master Gardner program and the Garden Information Center. The Knights of Columbus chapter at St. Jerome's is holding a fish fry from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday to benefit the St. Jerome's School. Riverdale Park calls for artists
The Riverdale Park Arts Council is looking for artists and artisans within the community for its second annual Riverdale Park ArtsFest.
The council is accepting applications from artists and artisans who want to reserve space to exhibit their original work. The application fee for all artists is $20 by April 15 and $30 by April 25. Visit www.rpartscouncil.org for an application.

Farmers Market kicks off
The Riverdale Park Farmers Market will begin its 12th year on April 9. The market runs from 3 to 7 p.m. on Thursdays until Nov. 19 and is held in the town center at the corner of Rhode Island Avenue and Queensbury Road.
This year's market will also feature new and returning vendors like Calvert County-based Chesapeake Greenhouse, which sells hydroponic lettuce, and Harrisonville, Penn.-based J-Wen Diary selling grass-fed milk products. Glenn Burnie-based Chesapeake Gardens, a new vendor, sells soups and sauces made from local produce, and Aspers, Penn.-based Three Springs Fruit Farm will sell berries and produce starting in June.
Area egg hunts set
to begin this weekend
Area children will have a surplus of Easter Eggs to find this year, with four major egg hunts taking place before Easter on April 12.
On Saturday, the College Park Youth and Family Services is holding its egg hunt from 10 a.m. to noon. The event, located at 4912 Nantucket Road will also feature three legged relays, arts and crafts, face painting and a pie-eating contest.

Community college hosts second paper shredding day
Prince George's Community College is hosting a community shred day to help residents protect their identities by shredding personal papers from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday in Parking Lot B at 301 Largo Road in Largo.
Residents can drive to the college and drop off a maximum of five boxes of papers to be shredded for free. Visitors should enter the college's campus from the Prince Place entrance, located off Campus Way South. They must drive through — walking personal materials onto the campus isn't allowed.
