Kennedy family book author to speak at Friends School

Shannon Thomas Perich, author of ‘‘The Kennedys, Portrait of a Family,” a collection of the late Richard Avedon’s photographs of President John F. Kennedy and his young family, will speak at Sandy Spring Friends School at 7:15 p.m. April 9.

A reception and book-signing will follow the talk. The event is free and open to the public.

Perich is an associate curator in the photographic history collection at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. Her book is based on more than 75 selections from the collection of photos that Avedon donated to the Smithsonian.

Her commentary provides historical background on the sittings for the photos within the political and cultural context of the times.

Perich, who holds a master’s degree in museum studies from George Washington University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in photography from the University of Arizona, is the parent of a first-grader at Sandy Spring Friends School.

The event will be held in the school’s Performing Arts Center, located at 16923 Norwood Road in Sandy Spring.

‘Chalk Out the Smoke’set for Sunday

Billiards, music, food, singing competitions, dancing and door prizes will highlight the annual ‘‘Chalk Out the Smoke” party for high school students from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Sunday at Orange Ball Billiards in Rockville.

The event celebrates the effort to educate students about the dangers of smoking. It is sponsored by the county departments of Recreation and Health and Human Services, in addition to Students Oppose Smoking, the Youth Advisory Committee and the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

This year, local radio station HOT 99.5 will spin hits and the ‘‘Montgomery County Idol” finalists will compete until a winner is named.

Students must attend a Montgomery County high school and present a high school ID card. Admission is $3, or $2 with a canned food donation.

Farquhar offers funat Roadrunner Night

The Farquhar Middle School PTA will host a Roadrunner Night Carnival and Silent Auction 7 to 9:30 p.m. April 11.

The event will feature games, face painting, food, a bake sale, a silent auction, and a cake and candy walk. Farquhar spirit wear and tickets for ‘‘Annie, Jr.,” the school’s upcoming musical, will also be available for purchase.

An adult must accompany children.

Farquhar Middle School is located at 16915 Batchellors Forest Road in Olney.

‘Once Upon a Mattress’at Rockville High

Rockville High School will present ‘‘Once Upon a Mattress,” a musical that puts a comedic spin on a classic fairy tale, for one weekend this month.

The show will be presented at 7 p.m. April 11 and 12 and 2 p.m. April 13 in the Zane Rush Auditorium, located on the school’s campus at 2100 Baltimore Road in Rockville,

Tickets are $5 for students and $7 for adults, and are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Ticket sales will begin about an hour before each show.

MC to hold enrollment fair, open house

Montgomery College will hold an enrollment fair and open house 1-3 p.m. April 12 in the Theatre Arts Arena at its Rockville campus.

High school students, including seniors who plan to attend Montgomery College in the fall, and their parents are encouraged to attend.

Information will be available on the college’s academic programs, courses and student services. Special workshops about financial aid and admissions will also be offered.

The college’s admissions, financial aid and counseling offices will be open during the open house.

National College Faircoming to fairgrounds

The 2008 Spring National College Fair is coming to the Montgomery County Agricultural Center April 16 and 17.

The event will be held 9:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. April 16 and 9:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. April 17.

The Montgomery County Agricultural Center is located at 16 Chestnut St. in Gaithersburg.
