I remember the last budget crisis in Montgomery County in the early 1990s. At that time, the same looming budget deficit was facing us.

The county executive raised taxes. The County Council raised taxes. And then the council recommended a decreased budget to the board of education. The board of education had the choice — it could increase class sizes, cut programs, or cut the enormous salary increase that was out of sync with the time.

The board voted to cut the raises to something more manageable. Will this council and this board also have the guts to do that? Or, will they balance the budget on the backs of our children?

Let’s hope that our elected leaders vote to support our top priority — our children.
