‘Race for a Dream’ to benefit Blake’s afterprom

James Hubert Blake High School is holding its fourth annual 5K run and 3K walk, ‘‘Race for a Dream,” 10 a.m. May 4 to benefit Blake’s afterprom and to promote teen driver safety.

The run will take place at Blake, 300 Norwood Road, Silver Spring, rain or shine. Cost to register is $10 before May 2 and $20 after. Race day registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The top three male and female runners will win awards. The first 500 participants will win T-shirts and their will be refreshments after the race.

Schools to put on spring performances

Several eastern Montgomery County school are holding spring theater performances.

*James Hubert Blake: ‘‘Les Miserables” April 25 and 26 and May 1, 2 and 3 at the school, 300 Norwood Road, Silver Spring. Call 301-879-1300.

*Paint Branch: The spring production at Paint Branch High School, ‘‘Bells Are Ringing” will be performed 7:30 p.m. April 18, 19, 26 and 27 at the school, 14121 Old Columbia Pike, Burtonsville. Cost is $7 students, $10 adults. Call 301-989-5600.

Blair to hold Spring Fling Dance

The Spring Fling Dance featuring the Montgomery Blair High School jazz bands, string orchestra with special guest instrumentalist Chuck Redd will be held 7:30 p.m. April 12 at the school’s student activities center, 51 University Blvd. E., Silver Spring.

Redd will play after the Blair Groups, and there will be free dance lessons from Arthur Murray Dance Studios. There will be food, prizes, and bidding on gift baskets.

Friends schoolto host concert

Students at Thornton Friends School in Silver Spring are hosting a concert 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. April 18 at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Silver Spring, 10309 New Hampshire Ave. Cost is $5. Proceeds will benefit local environmental organizations The Monarch Effect and the Chesapeake Climate Action Network.

The event will feature vegan food and music by Kamikaze Stunt Devils, Mad Brenda and Thornton teachers Libby Edwards and Layne Garrett.

Blair student to attend leadership seminar

Cameron Reed of Montgomery Blair High School will be one of about 190 sophomore students who will attend the Hugh O’Brian Youth Maryland Leadership Seminar May 23-25 at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg.

The students will discuss topics with leaders in the business, government and education fields, according to a news release from the seminar.

Principals or advisers nominate students and only one per school may attend.
