Keeping commuter rail stations open
|
A recent article in The Gazette included the sentence: "Installing a MARC (commuter rail) station at either White Flint site could disrupt service to the Garrett Park station and potentially require station closure."
As a long-time train rider mainly between Garrett Park and Union Station, I suggest that disruption and closure are unnecessary. Do not regard these two stations as mutually exclusive.
At present some trains stop at Garrett Park and others do not — this practice could be continued.
Several commuters reach the Garrett Park station by foot or bicycle. Forcing them to drive to White Flint will increase traffic, parking congestion and atmospheric pollution.
If the goal of the White Flint station is to bring workers there from Western Maryland and West Virginia, data are needed about what time they want to arrive and depart in order to reach an optimal decision for all.
