Schools CEO says improvement plan will be ready by end of year

Friday, March 31, 2006

Newly hired county schools’ CEO John Deasy said Friday that his plan to improve student achievement and turn chronically under-performing schools around will be ready by December.

Deasy made that announcement in Upper Marlboro during his first press conference since the School Board appointed him to the top spot.

‘‘The youth have the promise of an excellent education on paper,” Deasy said. ‘‘We have very little time to waste in delivering that.”

Deasy said his goals include strengthening classroom teaching and community partnerships to provide the same quality of instruction to all students, regardless of their economic background or residence in the county.

‘‘Smart is something you become, not what you are,” he said. ‘‘All means all and it will mean all.”

Deasy’s official start date as CEO is May 1.
