County loaded for track seasonThe county high school outdoor track season kicked off last weekend, and several teams will be in the hunt for championships come May. Once again, Eleanor Roosevelt High’s boys’ and girls’ teams are the favorites to sweep the county, South Region and state Class 4A championships. Several challengers await the Roosevelt boys, including defending state champ Oxon Hill. In addition, Oxon Hill’s girls’ team will look to build on a strong showing during the winter campaign. After falling short for the state 3A⁄2A indoor title, the Largo High girls are on the short list for the outdoor 3A title. DeMatha High will attempt to retain its hold in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference while Bishop McNamara and Elizabeth Seton should battle it out for the girls’ crown. Athletes to watch Stacey Adams, Potomac: The Wolverine senior will look to defend his state 2A boys’ discus title after winning state indoor shot put in 3A⁄2A. Doris Anyanwu, Roosevelt: The two-time Star⁄Gazette all-county indoor pick will be a key ingredient as Raider girls seek several relay titles including a victory at the prestigious Penn Relays in Philadelphia. Saniel Atkinson, McNamara: The defending WCAC girls’ high jump champ may be the best overall jumper in the county. Lindsey Blake, McNamara: She is arguably the top girls’ sprinter in WCAC after winning 100-meter title last year, and at the tough T.C. Williams (Va.) Invitational. Shaunte Boney, Largo: The sophomore will seek a Triple Crown in the high jump after falling short at state finals last year. Adrian Browne, Roosevelt: The Raiders’ middle distance specialist looks to follow up a strong indoor campaign. Waquesha Canty, Charles H. Flowers: She should challenge in 100 after missing the Triple Crown in the 55 during the indoor season. Joann Coley, Largo: She will look for an encore after winning Star⁄Gazette Field Athlete of the Year honors during the indoor campaign. Keenan Fenwick, Flowers: He will attempt to follow former teammate Brett Brown as the county’s top male hurdler. Jerod Franklin, Flowers: The Star⁄Gazette Boys’ Indoor Runner of the Year this past winter, he will be one of the state’s best in the 800 and 1,600. Warren Gray, Oxon Hill: He will challenge for state titles in the high jump and triple jump for the defending 4A champs. Selena Haggins, Central: Haggins will be a factor in girls’ 100 and 300 hurdles after winning the state 2A⁄1A 55 hurdles title over the winter. Dionna Hayes, Seton: After posting state’s top indoor time in 200, she will be a key for Roadrunners’ WCAC outdoor title hopes. Elan Hilaire, Roosevelt: The defending state 4A champ in girls’ 100 and 200, Hilaire hopes to help the Raiders reclaim postseason team titles. Takecia Jameson, Roosevelt: Jameson will be a key component as the Raiders may have the pieces to finally capture a Championship of America title at the Penn Relays next month. Tameka Jameson, Roosevelt: Jameson will shoot for a second straight state girls’ 400 title before heading to University of Miami. Eunice Jones, Central: The Falcons will need Jones to repeat her state 2A⁄1A indoor title-winning middle distance performances if they hope to retain state 2A outdoor crown. Imani Colbert, Flowers: The Jaguar hurdler will look for redemption after falling in the state 4A⁄3A indoor girls’ 55 semifinals. Krystin Lawson, Henry A. Wise: Last spring’s Star⁄Gazette Girls’ Outdoor Runner of the Year should be ready to go for the first-year Wise program after missing the indoor season because of an ankle injury. Dominique Lockhart, Roosevelt: She will seek a third straight state 4A 1,600 title after missing the indoor campaign. Monica Mason, McNamara: One of several promising young performers, Mason won the WCAC 400 title as a freshman last spring. Montwaynise McLauchlin, Potomac: The defending county girls’ 100 champ is an early favorite for state 2A glory in the 100 and 200. Davin Meggett, Surrattsville: The Star⁄Gazette’s Boys’ Indoor Field Athlete of the Year this past winter, Meggett should challenge for state 1A titles in the shot put and 100. Teika Robinson, Seton: The defending WCAC girls’ triple jump champ, Robinson will play a big role in the Roadrunners’ hopes of dethroning McNamara. Devon Smith, Roosevelt: The state 4A runner-up in the boys’ indoor 55, Smith should be a contender in the 100 this spring. Sean Suber, DeMatha: Suber will be instrumental in the Stags’ hopes of defending the WCAC boys’ title and making another run at the Championship of America relay finals at Penn Relays. Kelli Thibou, Roosevelt: He will be pressed for a repeat Triple Crown in the 800 with challenges from Franklin and possibly his Raider teammate Browne. Lamaar Thomas, Friendly: He will look to add the state boys’ 3A 100 title to the state 3A⁄2A 55 crown he claimed during the indoor season. Marika Walker, Roosevelt: The North Carolina State-bound distance specialist will try to become the first athlete to win all three Star⁄Gazette Runner of the Year honors in the same school year. Joycelyn Wheeler, Largo: The reigning Star⁄Gazette Girls’ Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year, Wheeler headlines a solid throwing corps that will put the Lions in the hunt for the state 3A title.
