Wheaton & Kensington Chamber honors outstanding members of the community

County holds job fair

The ‘‘Let’s Get it Started” job fair designed to provide ages 16 to 21 employment and internship opportunities will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 14 in the gymnasium on the Montgomery College’s Rockville campus, 51 Mannakee St., Rockville.

The Montgomery County Workforce Investment Board Youth Council and the Latin American Youth Center’s Maryland Multicultural Youth Centers are hosting the job fair.

The job fair will include more than 30 employers looking for seasonal and permanent employees, community resources, on-site interviews and prizes. Interested people are asked to bring resumes, personal information such as a Social Security number for job applications, and a blue or black pen. Interview-appropriate attire is recommended. A 50+ Job Fair and Employment Expo will take place 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 24 at the Marriott Bethesda North Hotel and Conference Center, 5701 Marinelli Road. The all-day expo is sponsored by the Jewish Council for the Aging with a grant from Montgomery County. Arch Campbell of WJLA Channel 7 is the scheduled keynote speaker.

The event will host a broad cross-section of agency representatives, with recruiters from dozens of companies attending, including nonprofits, government, health care, retail and technology, according to a news release.

Seminars will be offered throughout the day on various topics, including online applications, changing careers and resume writing. Participants also can learn about how to surf the Internet for a job and Web site lists.

Co-sponsors include Montgomery Works; The Senior Beacon; Senior Service America; Comcast; and WJLA.

The event is free and open to anyone age 50 or older. Registration will take place on site on the day of the event.

Women’s fair slated for Saturday

The 2007 Montgomery County Women's Fair, including workshops, exhibits, awards, networking and lunch, will be held 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Doubletree Rockville Hotel and Executive Meeting Center, 1750 Rockville Pike, Rockville. Silver Spring chamber hosts March events

A business after-hours sponsored by the Greater Silver Spring Chamber of Commerce will be held 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Sandy Spring Bank, 8677 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring. Cost is free for members; nonmembers pay $10. Call 301-565-3777.

County chamber hosts March events

A Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce breakfast seminar titled ‘‘Where There’s Golf, There’s Business” will be held today at Lakewood County Club, 13901 Glen Mill Road, Rockville. The event will feature Strelmark President Hillary Bruggen Fordwich and a discussion about using golf to leverage sponsorship dollars, the best time to bring up business during a game, and the power of gold in bidding on projects, bringing in new business, and deepening client relationships. Cost is $125 for chamber members; $200 for nonmembers.

Teachers, schools to be honored in ‘Champions for Children’ gala

Several Montgomery County public schools teachers and administrators will be honored at the April 26 ‘‘Champions for Children” awards gala at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center. The gala, sponsored by the Montgomery County Business Roundtable for Education, honors educators, business people and volunteers.

Honorees include the three finalists for county teacher of the year: Phillip D’Agnese, Spark M. Matsunaga Elementary; Noreen Gale, Oakland Terrace Elementary; and Raul Ortiz, Damascus High School. The Greenblatt Rookie Teacher of the Year is Olga Shapiro of Rockville High School.

Carole Goodman, the principal of James Hubert Blake High School, won the Dr. Edward Shirley Award for administrators.

Herenia Lopez, an ESOL paraeducator at Eastern Middle School, is the Supporting Services Employee of the Year.

Thomas W. Pyle Middle School PTA earned the Volunteer Champion for Children award.

Alison Malmon of Active Minds Inc., a 1999 graduate of Winston Churchill High School, is the winner of the MCPS Distinguished Alumni Award.

Nelson McLeod, principal of Newport Mill Middle School, is being honored with the Washington Post Distinguished Educational Leadership Award.

Suburban Hospital was honored with the Business Champion for Children award.
