With all of the accolades earned by the Mount St. Mary’s University men’s basketball team, the school’s baseball team has found the road to success a bit harder.

The Mountaineers began the season with a 15-game losing streak. However, former Liberty High standout Josh Vittek put the long skid to an emphatic end over the weekend, smashing a game-winning homer to defeat the University of Pennsylvania, 4-3 in the second game of a double header this past Saturday in Philadelphia.

Vittek registered the fatal blow with two outs in the top of the ninth inning. He finished the game with three hits, two runs batted-in and two runs scored. One of the runs he drove in was fellow Liberty alum Drew Counselman, who reached base on an error and came home on Vittek’s double.

Century grad Jimmy Mudgett allowed nine hits and three walks with a strikeout. He was picked up by Mike Matta, who allowed three hits in the final 1 2⁄3 innings to earn the win.

The day before, Counselman and Vittek drove in two runs each in the opening game and nightcap, respectively against the Quakers, who won both games 6-3 and 6-5.

The Mount hosted Georgetown on Wednesday after The Gazette’s press deadlines.
