Focus on safety instead of ban on natural gas sites

As a resident of [Prince George’s] County, and one living relatively close to the proposed Washington Gas [liquefied natural gas] site on Chillum Road, I must disagree with your headline [‘‘Residents support natural gas bill,” March 13]. I do not support House Bill 1043.

While I can and do appreciate the safety concerns associated with an LNG site in a residential area, I do not believe that the long-term interests of the county and its residents are served by a prohibition against all such sites within the county limits. Such a stance says to our neighbors in Anne Arundel, Howard and Baltimore counties that they must bear the risks involved in providing a clean, efficient and domestic energy source to the residents of [Prince George’s] County, and as such represents the very worst sort of NIMBY-ism.

I would expect Del. [Jolene] Ivey (D-Dist. 47) of Cheverly and the rest of [the] county delegation to work with Washington Gas and other natural gas suppliers to develop safety standards commensurate with the risks involved. Just saying no to natural gas in our community is just saying no to the future and the jobs it brings with it.
