An open letter to Sen. Paul Pinsky on global warming

I’m writing this open letter because when I write politicians I always get back some type of form letter. By writing it this way, I am in hopes that you will explain SB 309 to me and the rest of your constituents.

I strongly object to the title, ‘‘Global Warming Solutions — Reductions in Greenhouse Gases.” There is no scientific proof that greenhouse gases cause global warming. In fact, scientists don’t even know which came first, the warming or increases in carbon dioxide. Many noted scientists and climatologists claim that greenhouse gases have nothing to do with it. Scientific experiments have proven that radiation from solar flares on the sun work on our oceans and increase the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere. They are saying we could be in for cooler weather due to less activity on the sun recently.

One thousand years ago, the earth was warmer than it is today. About the year 1300, the earth began to cool. The earth continued to cool for about 450 years. About the time of our Civil War, the earth began to rewarm. The earth rewarmed until about the time of World War II. Then we had a slight cooling from roughly 1940 until 1970. Some scientists were warning us about a coming ice age. This past year was one of the coldest in decades.

The most abundant greenhouse gas, water vapor, makes up about 2 percent of the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide makes up about .038 percent of the atmosphere and of that humans contribute about .033 percent. That’s like saying that if a 10,000 [gallon] tank of water represented the atmosphere, water vapor would make up 200 gallons, carbon dioxide would make up 3.8 gallons and human produced carbon dioxide would make up about 16 ounces of that.

These burdens placed on residents of Maryland will accomplish nothing tangible as far as global warming goes. Yes, it will make politicians feel better, but the only thing it will accomplish is to place a burden on the citizens of Maryland.
