It’s All-Star Friday for area ballers

Local high school basketball junkies will get their final dosage of roundball this school year on Friday at Thomas Johnson High, as the 29th Annual Frederick County Coaches All-Star Classic will begin at 6 p.m. with the City vs. County girls game.

The boys game will follow, as the county squads will try to make up ground in both the boys and girls contests.

The City, represented by all school located inside of the Frederick City boundaries (Frederick, Maryland School for the Deaf, New Life Christian School, St. John’s-Catholic Prep, Thomas Johnson, Tuscarora, Frederick Warriors).

The City holds a 16-12 series advantage over the County girls team, comprised of Brunswick, Catoctin, Middletown, Linganore, Urbana, Walkersville. On the boys side, the City holds a commanding 22-6 series lead.

As usual, there will be plenty of extra features added to the evening’s festivities. At halftime of the girls game, there will be free throw-shooting contest. After the girls game and before the boys game, there will be a girls 3-point shooting and a boys slam dunk contest. The boys 3-point shooting contest will commence at halftime of the boys game.

Admission to the game is $5 per person. All proceeds from the games will enable the Frederick County Coaches Association to award two Frederick County athletes with a $500 scholarship at this spring’s annual Scholar-Athlete Banquet.

Girls named to the city team are: Naomi Carroll, Sanna Ali and Jatorie Jones (Frederick); Kimberly Passarelli (Frederick Warriors); Andrea Amati (Maryland School for the Deaf); Jenny Foit and Sarah True (Thomas Johnson), Jessica Humphrey, Akilah Hill and Jasmine Guillory (Tuscarora). They will be coached by Tuscarora head and assistant coaches Brooke Crawford and Kevin Crawford.

The county will be represented by Danielle Maught (Brunswick); Tara Stackhouse and Brittany Chmelik (Catoctin); Holly Havenstein and Jen Bonifant (Linganore); Colleen McCarrick, Kelsey House and Kristen Bauk (Middletown);HannahMcBee, Katie Nordyke and Kelly Mohns (Urbana); and Sabrina Sparkman (Walkersville). Urbana assistant coaches Jessica Mills and Ann Orelli will coach the county team.

The city boys squad will consist of Guy Barnes (Frederick); Mark Korn (Maryland School for the Deaf); A.J. Anthony (New Life Christian); Trenton Epps and Greg Hunt (St. John’s-Catholic Prep); Max Fisher, Denzel Randolph and Roy Comer (Thomas Johnson); Dereck Holland, Antoine Smith, Luis Cotto (Tuscarora) and Brian Kidd (Tuscarora). Vance Rewolinski of MSD will coach the City team.

The county boys roster includes: Andrew Simpson and Austin Darling (Brunswick); Matty Thompson (Catoctin); Chris Kluetz and Pat Kelly (Linganore); Michael Oursler, Winston Towns and Woody Butler (Middletown); Andrew Stephens and Chase Arrighi (Urbana); Jabari Brown and Sean Abercrombie (Walkersville).

Linganore assistant coach Eric Jackson will take over the coaching duties for the County contingent.

The County swept last year’s games, with the girls winning, 81-45 and the boys prevailing, 95-86.
