Player of the Year
Percy Woods, Crossland, Sr.
The Crossland senior was a pure scorer who proved nearly impossible to stop. Woods scored 1,357 points for his career and 631 points during the 2008-09 season. He bounced back for an incredible senior season after having his junior year cut short due to academic troubles. Woods averaged 28.4 points per game this season and shot better than 80 percent from the foul line. He had three 40-point performances along with six games of 30 points or more.
Coach of the Year
Rob Garner, Friendly, second year
Garner came in with a plan during the summer of 2007 and saw the fruits of his efforts this season as the Patriots finished as the state Class 2A runner-up. After several poor seasons, the Patriots finished three games over .500 in Garner's first season. This season, the Patriots won a deep, competitive County 3A/2A/1A League, finishing 18-1 in league play, and they went on to capture the Class 2A South Region championship.
First Team
Jarvon Farrell, Riverdale Baptist, Sr.
Farrell helped the Crusaders finish 28-5 this season, winning most valuable player honors at three regular season tournaments. He averaged 16.7 points and 7.8 rebounds this season. Farrell will attend the University of Massachusetts.
Branden Waters, Forestville, Sr.
The senior played well against the county's better teams including point outputs of 31 and 28 in two games against league champ Friendly. For the season, Waters averaged 18.9 points, 10.1 rebounds and better than two blocks per game.
Phil Wood, Henry A. Wise, Sr.
Wood was part of a senior trio that included Delonta Boyd and David Golladay that helped the Pumas advance to the state Class 4A state final. Wood helped the Pumas on the inside and from the perimeter, averaging 15.5 points with better than six rebounds, six assists and nearly three steals per game.
Kyle Jackson, Flowers, Sr.
Jackson, caught the eye of numerous coaches and opponents this season as he provided the main offensive spark for the Jaguars, surpassing the 20-point mark in nine games. The junior guard averaged 17.8 points per game.
Talib Zanna, McNamara, Sr.
Perhaps the top frontcourt presence in the county, Zanna capped his prep career by averaging 14.5 points, 15 rebounds and three blocked shots per game. Zanna is headed to the University of Pittsburgh.
Colin Beatty, DuVal, Sr.
The senior guard endured a tough season for the Tigers, who lost several players in February due to academic ineligibility. Beatty had just one game this season in which he scored fewer than 12 points, as he averaged 22.4 points and 10.8 rebounds, including 31.4 points per game in the team's last five games.
Naji Hibbert, DeMatha, Sr.
Hibbert makes his second appearance on the first team after helping the Stags capture their fourth Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship in five seasons. Hibbert averaged better than 11 points per game this season and hit the game-winning shot in the WCAC final. He is headed to Texas A&M University.
A.J. Thomas, Friendly, Sr.
The senior was the heart and soul of the Patriots' resurgence. He was a constant threat from beyond the arc, connecting on 47 3-point field goals. Thomas had 15 games this season in which he scored 20 points or more, while averaging 18 points and more than five assists per game.
Lasan Kromah, Eleanor Roosevelt, Sr.
The senior recently committed to play for George Washington University. Kromah helped the Raiders advanced to yet another Class 4A South Region final, while averaging 18.1 points and nearly 10 rebounds per game.
