Selena Nwude The tall, talented senior center capped her high school career in grand fashion by leading the Raiders to their second consecutive 4A state championship. Nwude, who scored 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the Raiders’ 53-45 victory over Gaithersburg in the 4A state title game on March 11, averaged 17 points, 14 rebounds and 6.3 blocks per game this winter for the 26-1 squad. Nwude, who is headed to the University of Pittsburgh on a basketball scholarship, completed her prep career with more than 1,300 rebounds, 1,000 points and 800 blocked shots. coach of the year Debbie Skelly After losing in the finals of last year’s Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference tournament, Skelly and Pallotti returned with a purpose this past winter. The Panthers won the title, the first league crown for the Laurel private school since it won a Catholic Girls’ Athletic Association title in 1985. With its entire starting five returning this season, Pallotti (21-3) steamrolled through the IAAM B schedule, winning by an average margin of more than 20 points. The Panthers outlasted two-time defending champ Severn from Anne Arundel County to cap a perfect record in league play. First team Taleia Moton, Suitland, junior: Moton emerged as one of the county’s up-and-coming stars. The guard averaged 22 points, five assists and five rebounds for the Rams, who lost to C.H. Flowers in the 4A South Region quarterfinals. In consecutive games against Parkside from the Eastern Shore and Flowers, the5-foot-6 Moton had a season-high 33 points. Kandace Davis, Laurel,senior: Davis led the Spartans in every major category, helping Laurel to a 14-9 mark. She averaged 15.5 points, 16 rebounds and 6.2 blocked shots per game. Twice she scored 24 points in one game and pulled down21 rebounds in a loss to Roosevelt. Davis is headed to Towson University this fall to continue her basketball career. Lakiah Hyson, Gwynn Park, senior: Although her prep career ended in defeat in the state 3A semifinals, Hyson poured in 31 points in her final high school game, Gwynn Park’s 64-50 loss to Baltimore City’s Western. Hyson averaged 16 points per game for the 22-4 Yellow Jackets and she was part of teams that won the state championship in 2003 and 2004. She is leaning toward attending Coppin State this fall. Demauria Lyles, RiverdaleBaptist, senior: One of the primary reasons the Crusaders went 28-6 and captured the National Christian Schools championships in Dayton, Tenn., Lyles averaged 17 points, 14 rebounds, three blocks, three assists and two steals per game. She recorded season-high totals of 29 points and 23 rebounds in a victory over Caravel Academy. She will play next season for the University of Maryland. Lindsay Harris, RiverdaleBaptist, senior: Another key member of the 28-6 Crusaders, Harris averaged 16 points, eight rebounds, four steals and two assists per game. She posted a season high of 31 points and is headed to the University of Rhode Island this fall on a basketball scholarship. Jori Nwachukwu, McNamara, senior: Mustangs’ coach Rob Surratt said many scouts in years past knocked Nwachukwu’s scoring ability. But Nwachukwu did what she was asked on her way to a solid senior campaign in which she averaged 13 points, 10 rebounds and three steals per contest. Nwachukwu, who had a flood of offers arise as the season went on, will continue her basketball career at North Carolina Central . Paulisha Kellum, McNamara, senior: Halfway through her freshman season, Kellum became the Mustangs’ starting point guard and has been a fixture in the starting lineup since then. She spent this season rotating between shooting guard and forward and averaged 15 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. Kellum will play at the University of Virginia this fall. Courteney Morris, Parkdale, senior: An integral part of the Panthers’ success, Morris provided scoring, rebounding and leadership, averaging 16 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists per game, helping the team to a share of the County 4A title and a victory in the county championship game against Gwynn Park. Morris scored a season-high 33 points against Crossland, collected 11 double-doubles and six triple-doubles during the season. Brittany Hollins, Largo,senior: A transfer from DuVal, Hollins averaged 18.9 points per game for the 19-3 Lions, including a season-high 38 points in a victory against Potomac. She also had a 32-point performance against Crossland and six other games with 20 points or more. second team Zykia Brown, Parkdale Glen Charlton, DuVal Vicki Collier, Riverdale Baptist Brittany Crowell, Gwynn Park Michelle Dearing and Kendall Shepard,Northwestern Davida Dodson and Lakeisha Wright, Roosevelt Annesia Faulkner, Ashley Lyles andBeth Ann Fusco, Pallotti Mimi Goff, Crossland Brittany James, Friendly Karessa Sauls, Bowie Ashley Spriggs, McNamara Brittany Washington, Flowers
