Nurse nearing lifelong goal of college degree

With her eye on a career in the healthcare industry, Catherine Smith of New Market is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

The Linganore High School graduate is already is a registered nurse through a program at Frederick Community College, where she was an honors student.

She earned a 3.98 grade point average last semester at Catholic University and expects to graduate in December.

Smith is the daughter of Susan and Darby Smith of New Market.

New Market residentearns academic honors

Congratulations to New Market resident Kaitlin Sullivan, a Northeastern University student and journalism major, who was named to the Boston school’s dean’s list for the fall semester.

To earn a spot on the dean’s list, students must maintain a grade point average of 3.25 or higher.

Sullivan is an honors student and is part of a new program at Northeastern in which students live in special interest on-campus housing and participate in one or two honors classes each semester.

Urbana libraryto host ‘green’ author

Author Greg Pahl will discuss environmental topics at 2 p.m., March 31, at Urbana Regional Library, 9020 Amelung St., Urbana.

Pahl, who has written on a variety of environmental topics for several publications for more than 25 years, is the author of books on bio-diesels, wind power, heat pumps, electric cars, ‘‘green” homebuilding and forest management.

At the book-signing event, Pahl will discuss how renewable energy can be produced locally, among other environmental issues

Locals completebasic training

Army Private Ephraim J. Bryan has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C.

During nine weeks of training, Bryan studied topics including the Army mission and history and received instruction such as rifle marksmanship, map reading, unarmed combat and field training exercises.

Bryan, a 2003 graduate of Frederick High School, is the son of Marie Carter of Frederick.

Another member of the FHS class of 2003, Air Force Airman James H. Hilderbrand, has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

His military training class also featured two recent graduates of Gov. Thomas Johnson High School.

Airman Lauren A. McGowan, a 2004 TJ High graduate, and Airman Crysta A. Saunders, a 2005 TJ High graduate, also completed their training.

All three airmen attended six weeks of training studying the Air Force mission and customs as well as field training exercises and special instruction in human relations.

Accountants add accolades to career achievements

The Maryland Society of Accountants Inc. has issued a pair of accounting professionals with its annual ‘‘Fellows Award.” The award is presented by the nonprofit organization to professionals who convey a standard of professionalism through education and a dedication to professional excellence.

The group recognized Jack Hayes and Timothy C. (T.C.) Williams of Frederick, among 57 award winners.

Hayes owns and operates a tax preparation and consulting business on West Patrick Street. He has been in business since 1983, specializing in income tax preparation, probate, estates and financial consulting. This is Hayes’ fifth consecutive year being designated as an MSA Fellow.

Williams owns his own practice where he provides service to a variety of small- to medium-sized businesses, professionals and individuals in the Washington, D.C., area.

Dorris is the Pokemon king

In just under three months, 7-year-old Ryan Dorris of Frederick has captured his second Pokemon tournament title.

On March 3, he placed first in the 2007 Pennsylvania Pokemon State Championships in the junior division, defeating 16 other players.

He earned the right to play in that event by winning the New Holland, Pa., junior championship in December after picking up the game just a few months earlier.

In tournaments held across the country, players of all ages use their personal decks of Pokemon playing cards to top each other with different characters who hold various point values.

Dorris, a second-grade student at Whittier Elementary School, took home a state championship trophy and a travel allowance to attend the national championship in July in Columbus, Ohio.
