Wrestler of the Year

Brad Katzenberger

Damascus, Sr., 160 pounds (36-0)

Overcame rough junior campaign to capture county, region and state titles and finished with a perfect record.

Coach of the Year

Damascus, 20th year

Guided Swarmin’ Hornets (17-1) to 4A-3A West Region dual-meet crown and to the county and regional tournament titles.

Will SharbaughWhitman, Jr., 103 pounds (37-0)

Won county and regional championships, and then won his first state title.

Sean McCartyNorthwest, Soph., 112 pounds (37-1)

Followed stellar freshman campaign by winning county and regional titles while placing second at the 4A-3A state meet.

Andy LowySherwood, Jr., 119 pounds (34-0)

Lowy capped an undefeated season by capturing his second consecutive state championship.

Zach TolbertMagruder, Sr., 125 pounds (26-2)

Recovered from off-season surgery on both knees to return to form, winning the regional title, and placing second in the state.

Rheatt BeattieSherwood, Jr., 125 pounds (31-1)

Sidelined for the regional and state tournaments due to illness, but went undefeated against county competition, winning the county title.

Steven GambleSherwood, Fr., 130 pounds (34-4)

Showed steady improvement over the season, avenging early setbacks to win county, region, and ultimately a state title.

Steven MillerPaint Branch, Soph., 135 pounds (36-4)

Best county wrestler in the weight class helped Paint Branch to qualify for 4A-3A West Region duals, and won county and regional titles.

Josh RosenthalR. Montgomery, Sr., 140 pounds (40-5)

Season-long upswing culminated in county and regional titles. Placed sixth at the state tournament.

Roger TorresPoolesville, Sr., 145 pounds (38-3)

Finished solid career by winning first county title, while also placing second at regionals and fifth at the 2A-1A state meet.

Eren CivanWhitman, Jr., 152 pounds (38-0)

Maybe the most dominant wrestler in the county. Won third straight county, regional and state titles. Owns a career record of 118-0.

Brent StewartPaint Branch, Sr., 171 pounds (38-1)

Became the Panthers’ first state champion since 2002, capping a season in which he also won county and regional titles.

Aaron FinkhousenNorthwest, Sr., 189 pounds (34-3)

Walter Johnson transfer pounded competition en route to county and regional titles. Finished career by taking fifth at the state meet.

John HollowayMagruder, Sr., 215 pounds (31-0)

Enjoyed an undefeated senior season and won every major title, including a second consecutive state championship.

Jim PopeGeorgetown Prep, Sr., 215 pounds (35-4)

Placed first at IAC, Maryland Private School and St. Albans tournaments and took second at National Preps in breakout year.

Mark WilsonWatkins Mill, Sr., 275 pounds (40-2)

Proved to be best wrestler in loaded weight class, placing first at regionals, third at states and second at the county tournament.
