Sykesville’s Piney Run Park and Nature Center will see more classroom space this year to handle increasing demands for programs thanks to a state-awarded grant.

Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) announced last week a $58,140 Program Open Space grant to build what is called a yurt building at Piney Run.

Program Open Space is a state fund that provides money for recreational space throughout Maryland.

The round building is 30 feet in diameter with a wooden platform, vinyl siding and has a pointed roof with a skylight, said Jeff Degitz, director of Carroll County Recreation and Parks. It will be located a short distance from the Nature Center, he added.

‘‘It gives us a little more room to spread out and add some variety to our programs,” Degitz said.

These temporary buildings are more commonly used as shelters for campers in parks across the country, he added.

About 700 students attend an annual summer camp and the park sees about 111,300 visitors each year, according to a news release. Degitz said that the building will provide more space for classes for those students and other school groups and allow the Nature Center to handle walk-in traffic.

The county is required to contribute $6,460 to the project, he said.

Work is underway and the building should be completed this spring, he said.
