Th Village of Burkittsville in western Frederick County is entirely governed by women — it is the only municipality in the county that has an all-female council and mayor.
Four educated, easygoing women govern the Village of Burkittsville and its 170 residents.

The four consider themselves able and ready to handle any issues that impact the small town.

‘‘I think we’re approachable,” Mayor Deborah Burgoyne, 53, said.

For the second time since the town settled in 1732, its residents elected a female mayor and an all-female council in 2007. None of the village’s current leaders could point to why women are such popular political figures there, though.

Burgoyne works with Councilwomen Jayme S. Marshall, 50, Catherine Cox Murray, 58, and Jill Rothen.

They meet the second Monday in January, March, May, July, September and November to handle issues such as street cleaning, yard waste, mowing and the annual Easter egg hunt.

Before this month’s meeting, The Gazette sat down for a casual conversation with Burgoyne, Murray and Marshall. Rothen was unable to participate. During the discussion, the women said they were proud to serve a town that is rich in rural heritage and Civil War history.
