Sykesville officer receives scholarship for police schoolSgt. Shawn Kilgore of the Sykesville Police Department will receive a full-tuition scholarship to help prepare him in his supervising role at the department. Kilgore attends the Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command through a Maryland Chiefs of Police Association scholarship. The session, which started Feb. 18, is being held at the Public Safety Education and Training Center in Sykesville. He is expected to graduate May 2. The Maryland Chiefs of Police Association is an alliance of executive police officers from state, local and federal agencies dedicated to leading and supporting the efforts of police chiefs and law enforcement executives in advancing police services, according to a news release. The 10-week management program combines academics with practical applications and emphasizes highway safety and traffic management, according to the release. ‘‘We are extremely proud,” said Police Chief John R. Williams Jr. during the March 8 mayor and Town Council retreat. Kilgore could not be reached for comment by The Gazette’s Wednesday press time. Scholarship candidates completed a research abstract on one of five traffic safety concepts, and recipients will be required to complete their research and a related staff study on the topic of their choice. Kilgore is expected to go to Ocean City in the fall to address the association regarding his findings during the association’s annual training conference.
