Carrolltowne Elementary holds open house today

In an open house for the community, Carrolltowne Elementary staff will showcase winning entries from the school’s annual media festival contest from 3 to 4 p.m., today in the media center.

According to Suelyn Rivera, a media specialist at Carrolltowne Elementary, the festival is to stimulate students’ interest and involvement in media production.

The contest was open to all Carrolltowne Elementary students and features work in photography, graphic design, live action videotape, still slide shows and multi-media video.

First-, second- and third-place winners as well as all entries will be shown during the festival’s open house.

Sykesville Middle

*Sykesville Middle School will host a ‘‘Saint Patty’s Day Dance” for students from 7 to 9 p.m., tomorrow at the school.

*Parent and student volunteers are needed to help with Sykesville Middle’s third annual ‘‘Stars Over Sykesville” talent show. The talent show will be held at 7 p.m., April 21.

Century High

*Century High School will present ‘‘Beauty and the Beast” at 7 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and March 23 and 24 and at 2 p.m. on Saturday and March 24.

Advance tickets must be picked up by 6:45 p.m. on the night of the performance and at 1:45 p.m. before matinees.

*Student resource officer Paul Schur will hold an informational program for parents and guardians on drug prevention and awareness at 7 p.m., March 27 at Century High.

In the program Schur will go over what changes to look for in a child who uses drugs and different types of store-bought and homemade drug paraphernalia.

Officer Gregory Kies, who is with the Maryland State Police Homeland Security⁄Gang Violence Unit will also speak about what to look for in regard to area gangs.

Liberty High

*Join the Liberty athletic boosters as they get the fields ready for the spring season during the athletic maintenance day at 8 a.m., Saturday.

Projects include spreading gravel underneath the visitor bleachers at the stadium, weeding and trimming around stadium and track and power washing stadium seats and concrete.

Bring your shovels, trimmers, wire brushes, paint rollers, wheelbarrows, garden gloves, power washers and hoses.

Oklahoma Road Middle

*Tickets to Oklahoma Road drama club’s production of ‘‘Bulldog Saves the Day” are on sale.

The drama club will present ‘‘Bulldog Saves the Day” on March 30 and 31. Tickets are $5 each and must be purchased in advance since tickets will not be sold at the door.

Students also need a permission slip to buy tickets, which are available in students’ homerooms.

*Oklahoma Road Middle staff, students and parent volunteers pledged more than $6,000 during the school’s ‘‘Love to Read” readathon in February.

The event helped the school raise money for author Kimberly Willis Holt’s visit on April 26.

Countywide news

*The Maryland State Department of Education is sponsoring the 2007 Maryland Summer Centers for Gifted and Talented students.

Centers are located across the state and offer one to three week residential and non-residential programs with a focus on the arts, sciences, mathematics, technology, engineering, history, law and government, foreign languages and creative writing.

*Delegate Susan W. Krebs (R-9B) is accepting applications for the annual House of Delegates scholarship program.

To be eligible for a scholarship, students must be high school seniors living in Legislative District 9B (including Sykesville, Eldersburg and portions of Marriottsville) and plan to attend a Maryland college, university or career school during 2007-08.

Delegate Krebs’ scholarship committee awards scholarships based on applicants’ leadership, extracurricular activities, volunteer work, employment and scholastic achievement. The one-year scholarships are not renewable.

In 2006, nearly 38 students received legislative scholarships from Delegate Krebs that ranged from $500 to more than $1,000.

Liberty, Century and South Carroll high schools also have applications. Applications must be postmarked no later than April 30.

*Carroll County Public Schools’ pre-kindergarten program is accepting applications for the 2007-08 school year. The Pre-kindergarten program is designed to help children prepare for kindergarten. Students attend class five days a week for two and one half-hours, at no cost to parents. Children must be 4 years old by Sept. 1 in order to attend.

Families that qualify for Free and Reduced Meals (FaRM) or who are homeless have first priority.

Children who have limited English proficiency or prior participants in Even Start, Head Start, HIPPY and Families Learning Together have second priority.

Children, who show academic, social and emotional needs from the Pre-kindergarten assessment process have third priority.
