Forest Heights voters elect new council membersThe town of Forest Heights held elections Wednesday for town council members, one each from Wards 1, 2 and 3. In Ward 1, Jacqueline Goodall ran uncontested. Former Councilwoman, Anne Reifsneider was elected to the Ward 2 seat, defeating Cliff Atkinson and George McDermot. In Ward 3, William Clarke defeated challengers Larry Stoner, Tauyna Hines, Maurice Hatchett and Doris Stephens. ‘‘Maybe now we can get together and clean up this town. We now have enough people on the council to finally address the situation with the Mayor,” Clarke said. All three newly elected members said they hope to pass a resolution soon that will remove Mayor Myles Spires permanently. The election results will remain unofficial until the local Board of Elections meets later today to confirm voter registration data with the Prince George’s County Board of Elections. ‘‘My immediate plans are to help begin to reunite this town. I think the three council people elected are all very capable and knowledgeable and working together, we can begin to make a big difference in this little town,” Reifsneider said. Residents also voted on 10 questions that included restoring the mayor as chief executive officer, giving the mayor authority to appoint, supervising and dismissing employees, giving the mayor complete supervision over the financial administration of the town government, and restoring the mayor as the direct supervisor of the treasurer. However, town residents rejected the establishment of a code of conduct for public officials. The newly elected council members will join Councilwoman Lynne Smith Barnes in Ward 1, Councilwoman Andrea McCutheon in Ward 2 Councilman Worthington Ross in Ward 3. Spires, who is still serving as mayor, remains on suspension after he recently received a seven-count indictment from a Prince George’s County grand jury that included alleged embezzlement of town funds. His term expires in 2009.
