Led the boys team to late-season surge, winning county and Class 4A state championships along the way.

Athlete of the Year

Wil Zahorodny

Damascus, Sr. (500 meters)

Twice set year’s fastest high school 500-meter time in nation. Second was in 3A state championship meet, 1:04.71.

Avery Graham, Clarksburg, Jr., 55 meters

Helped Coyotes to second place at 2A state meet, winning individual title.

Brendan Etzel, Richard Montgomery, Sr., 300 meters

Like last year, owned event, winning county, region and state championships.

Chris Moen, Walter Johnson, Sr., 800 meters

Dominated 800 as he did 1,600 a year ago. Posted state-record 1:56.77 in 4A final.

Neal Darmody, Quince Orchard, Sr., 1,600, 3,200 meters

Dominated at both distances, winning county, regional and state titles.

Blair 4x200-meter relay - Chris Grindley, Sr.; Jonathan Haughton, Sr.; Louis Varella, Sr.; Mohamed Mansaray, Jr.

Class 4A state championship quartet blazed course in 1:31.73 to take title.

Damascus 4x400-meter relay - Evan Zedler, Sr.; Devante Thomas, Jr.; Joshua Francis, Sr.; Wil Zahorodny, Sr.

Won regional title, helping school secure first 3A West Region team crown.

Quince Orchard 4x800-meter relay - Josh Joson, Sr.; Chris Lasko, Jr.; Wayne Bartholomew, Jr.; David Laratta, Sr.

Foursome won 4A state title in 8:03.88, helping Cougars win team championship.

Tyler Jackson, Richard Montgomery, Sr., 55-meter hurdles

Won county, regional titles, and earned silver at Class 4A state championship.

Ryan Mullsteff, Damascus, Sr., High jump

Burst onto scene in first and only season of track, jumping county-best 6 feet, 6 inches to win 3A state championship.

Gary Frazier, Richard Montgomery, Sr., Long jump

County champ had area-best leap of 21 feet, 10 inches at Virginia Tech Invitational.

Sean Stanley, Gaithersburg, Jr., Shot put

Continued to improve, winning county, regional and state titles, and throwing county-best 56 feet, 1 inch.
